Women and the Web "Since Women Ask for Directions, the Web is Being Remapped," an article that appeared in the "E-Commerce" section of the March 29 New York Times, includes comments by MHC reference librarian Juliet Habjan Boisselle, whose affiliation with the College is also cited. The article explores the changing demographics of the Internet. Notes author Steven Brier, "Where men once ruled, women are taking over." According to Brier, women now account for about half the Web's audience and are signing on in greater numbers than men. Women differ from men both in the information they look for and the ways they look for it, forcing Web site designers to redesign everything from their palettes to their tools. Says Boisselle in the Times, citing one recent study, "Most women report learning their way around the Internet with the help of someone. Men report learning solo. In other words, women will ask directions, men won't." Boisselle first made these remarks at a seminar on women on the Web.
