Students Help Sea Islands Residents

Students

Charisse Pickron ’08 (left), Lindsey Santamaria ’08 (center), and Amy Wixon ’08 are three of approximately 30 MHC students and facilities management staff who spent spring break working in the South Carolina’s Sea Islands repairing and painting substandard housing. The Sea Islands are an impoverished area, home to migrant workers and descendants of slaves who are struggling to maintain their homes and communities. The trip, arranged through Rural Mission, Inc. of Johns Island, South Carolina, a Christian-based group, combined the students’ desire to create change in the world with the expertise of the facilities management workers, responsible for maintaining a campus frequently cited as one of the most beautiful in the nation.
