Oliver Mtukudzi and Black Spirits
will perform at 8 pm April 19 in Chapin Auditorium as part of
their current North American Tour. Chris Berry and Panjea, featuring
Jenn Kyker ’02, will open for Mtukudzi. The student programs
office has 800 free tickets available to MHC faculty, staff,
and students while supplies last. Free tickets can be picked
up at the Blanchard information desk, one per MHC ID.
Mtukudzi is the best-selling artist in his home country of Zimbabwe. Lovingly
called “Tuku” for short, Mtukudzi began recording in the mid-1970s
as a member of Wagon Wheels, a band that also featured Thomas Mapfumo. After
Wagon Wheels rolled to fame in Southern Africa, Mtukudzi formed Black Spirits,
the band that has backed him throughout his career.
Additional tickets for guests and the general public are $15 in advance, available
through the UMass/Amherst Fine Arts Center box office: call 413-545-2511 or 1-800-999-UMAS,
or buy online at www.fineartscenter.com. For
more information, contact John Laprade at Mount Holyoke at 413-538-2478. This
event is sponsored in part by 88.5FM–WFCR,
Public Radio for Western New England, and MIFA, Massachusetts International Festival
of the Arts.
