With a mission to "promote the diversity of music made by women through an annual festival to be held each spring in the Pioneer Valley; to increase awareness of female musicians across musical style,
geography, and age; to contribute to the prosperity of women performers; to open up opportunities for upcoming women musicians; and to give the valley an opportunity to celebrate," the second annual W.A.M! (Women and Music) Festival will be held in Chapin Auditorium Saturday, April 27, from 11 am to 8 pm. The celebration of women's music will feature a wide variety of performers and combine music on two stages. The side stage this year is hosted by WMHC in celebration of its fiftieth anniversary. Food vendors and female artisans will also be on hand. If music is not enough entertainment for you, there will also be hot air balloon rides and an appearance by local improv favorites the Villa Jidiots

Among the performers are singer/songwriter Patty Griffin, known for her passionate and intimate sound; Voices on the Verge (Erin McKeown, Jess Klein, Beth Amsel, and Rose Polenzani), whose debut album, Live in Philadelphia, was nominated for a Boston Music Award; Jill Sobule, renowned for her well-crafted songs that span everything from acoustic ballads to winsome rock; Toshi Reagon, whose influences range from Led Zeppelin and Kiss to her own mother, activist Bernice Johnson Reagon of Sweet Honey and the Rock; and Antigone Rising, a group composed of guitar- slinging sisters Cathy and Kristen Henderson, Dena Tauriello on drums, Anne-Marie Stehn on bass, and lead vocalist Cassidy.

The Office of Student Programs is offering a limited number of W.A.M. tickets at a discounted price of $15 for the MHC community. Discounted tickets are available now (with an MHC ID) at the Blanchard information desk as long as supplies last. Regular prices are as follows: $24 in advance and $30 at the door. Children under twelve are free. Call x2045 for more information. For festival and artist information, visit www.wamfest.com.
