Award-Winning Italian Film to be Screened April 24

A scene from I cento passi di Peppino Impastato, which will be screened at MHC April 24.

I cento passi di Peppino Impastato (The Hundred Steps), an award-winning film by Marco Tullio Giordana (in Italian with English subtitles), will be screened Tuesday, April 24, in Gamble Auditorium at 8 pm. Says Francesca Santovetti, visiting associate professor of Spanish and Italian, "I cento passi is a remarkable movie: a 'sensation' in Italy this year. It is still playing in theatres everywhere, and it keeps receiving major awards. It has not yet been released in the United States. This is a special preview for the students of Mount Holyoke and of the Five Colleges."

The independent Italian film is based on the true story of the life and death of Peppino Impastato, a young Sicilian who, after openly opposing the traditional Mafioso dynamics in his hometown of Cinisi on the outskirts of Palermo, was "mysteriously" killed May 8, 1978. Since its release last year, the film has won numerous prizes, including the Leone d'Oro for best screenplay at the Venice International Film Festival, 2000; the Grolla d’Oro for the two leading male actors at the Saint Vincent Film Festival, 2000; and the Golden Globe Nomination for Best Foreign Language Film of the year 2000. On April 10, I cento passi was awarded four David di Donatello awards (the Italian Oscar) for best screenplay, best actor, best actor in a supporting role, and best costumes.
