Jazz in the Air at MHC May 4

The Jazz Ensembles of Mount Holyoke will present "Flyin' High!," a spring concert, Saturday, May 4, at 7:30 pm in Pratt Hall's McCulloch Auditorium. Under the direction of Mark Gionfriddo, music will include Weather Report's "Birdland" (a tribute to Charlie "Bird" Parker); "American Patrol," by Glenn Miller, a theme popularized by the United States Army Air Force in 1942; "Ring Of Fire," an original composition by Fred Sturm, head of jazz composition and arranging at the Eastman School of Music; and "The Chicken," a tour de force on bass guitar featuring Caitlin Parsons '02.

Parsons, the last remaining charter member of the original MHC Jazz Ensemble formed in 1998, will also sing the late Peggy Lee's signature song, "Fever," with the Big Band, and Kyra Comroe '02 will be featured in Dave Brubeck's "Moody," a tribute to legendary sax player James Moody. Hannah Canning '04 will appear with the Chamber Jazz Ensemble, singing Johnny Mercer's "I Remember You"; and the Vocal Jazz Ensemble will present Burt Bacharach's vocal "South American Getaway," as arranged by Gionfriddo. Admission to the May 4 concert is free, but concertgoers are encouraged to arrive early due to the limited seating available in McCulloch Auditorium. Doors open a half hour before the concert.
