Kudos Bridget Lee ’02, Megan Schmidt ’02, and Veronica Stork ’04 have won the Freeman Award for Study in Asia, a new program administered by the Institute of International Education. This summer, Lee will study Chinese language at the Beijing Education Institute in China; Schmidt will focus on economics at Japan’s Sophia University; and Stork will learn about the Japanese language at the Princeton-in-Ishikawa Program in Japan. Awardees are expected to share their experiences with their home campus to spread understanding of Asia.
Sonam Belbase ’02 has won a Morgan Stanley Dean Witter Women in Technology Scholar’s Award, which is designed to encourage the pursuit of technology in the world of finance.

Trustee Highlights MHC’s board of trustees met May 4 and 5. The trustees approved degree candidates, the operating budget for fiscal year 2001–2002, and recommendations for reappointments, promotions, department chairs, sabbaticals, and emeritus status. The trustees endorsed Aaron Ellison’s promotion to full professor and approved emeritus status for John Durso, James Bruce, and Susan Perry. The board also approved the Blanchard Campus Center construction project. The trustees agreed that the College should attempt to receive “green” building certification for the Blanchard project, meeting Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards also being used for the science project.

International Fashion Statement A team from the Japanese magazine JJ visited Mount Holyoke this week to gather material for an article giving readers a glimpse at life at four colleges in the United States. Several students agreed to pose for the camera. The team, which included a photographer and writer from Tokyo and a translator from New York, visited the equestrian center, the library, the chapel, Blanchard Café, Skinner Green, and a dorm. The article is scheduled to appear in a special issue, targeted at women in their late teens, to be published in July. JJ is a lively, glossy magazine centered on fashion, and has a circulation of about 750,000.
