After a national search,
the College has named Eva Paus, professor of economics and founding
codirector of Mount Holyoke's Harriet L. and Paul M. Weissman
Center for Leadership, to the new position of director of global
initiatives. The College's newly adopted strategic plan, The
Plan for Mount Holyoke 2010, calls for the creation of the
position as part of a major emphasis on international education
and global citizenship at Mount Holyoke, which already has a long-standing
commitment to international understanding and engagement. In her
new post, Paus will work with an advisory committee, the International
Board, to coordinate and oversee international programming and
new initiatives at the College. The Plan also proposes that the
College seek faculty support and external funding for a global
studies institute to coordinate and energize the campus's international
offices and functions and to showcase Mount Holyoke's commitment
to global awareness and diverse community.
Paus, who joined Mount Holyoke's faculty in 1986, will begin
her new post in January 2004 after completing a six-month sabbatical
during which she will travel to Ireland and Costa Rica to conduct
research on high-tech foreign investment and industrialization
and small countries. "I am very excited about leading the
new global initiative," Paus says. "Given the College's
existing strengths in internationally related areas, the initiative
has enormous potential to broaden and deepen the venues for engagement
with other cultures and for intellectual exploration of the many-faceted
implications of globalization. Development of such understanding
is critical in light of the current state of the world."
"Eva has a proven track record of leadership and a strong
commitment to the importance of international education and global
citizenship," says President Joanne V. Creighton. "A
distinguished scholar and teacher, she has great credibility with
faculty and students and will be a strong leader of
this important initiative of The Plan for Mount Holyoke 2010.
I very much look forward to working with her." Lee Bowie,
professor of philosophy and incoming dean of the College, noted,
"Eva is just an inexhaustible reservoir of energy, ideas,
and leadership. I am so pleased that she will be the new director
of global initiatives and am looking forward to working closely
with her again." Bowie collaborated with Paus for more than
three years shaping the Weissman Center as a fellow founding codirector.
Paus's research
and teaching cover economic development and macro and international
economics. She has published widely on trade strategies in Latin
America, and on the impact of trade liberalization on industrialization,
wages, and productivity in developing countries. In her teaching,
Paus has been at
the forefront of introducing active learning pedagogies into her
economics classes, in particular debates, simulations, and the
case method.
Paus earned a bachelor's degree in economics and a certificate
in Latin American studies and master's and doctoral degrees
in economics, all from the University of Pittsburgh. Born in Germany,
she has done extensive fieldwork in Latin American countries through
research grants and fellowships. At Mount Holyoke, she has served
on the committees of academic policy, international relations,
and Latin American studies.
