Labor Relations Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao '75 is profiled
in the May edition of Working Woman magazine. Chao, the first Asian
American woman to hold a cabinet post, speaks with enthusiasm about
her new job and outlines the Bush administration's proposals for small
business. Chao also talks about the difficulties of maintaining a personal
life and reveals a detail about her upbringing: "In Chinese mythology,
we have women warriors. There is one woman called Hwa Mu-Lan. My mother
was named after her. So we always grew up thinking that we were women
warriors. And it was great, it was empowering. We could do anything
in this world." Horse Powerhouse An article in the April 6 edition of the Chronicle
of the Horse extols the team spirit that has contributed to the excellence
of Mount Holyoke's riding teams, including last year's International
Horse Show national champions. While the College has a "first-class
equestrian center," writer Mickey Rathbun says, "Mount Holyoke's
success cannot be attributed merely to bricks and mortar and well-trained
riders." Coach C. J. Law relates her approach: I want my
riders to get to know each other. That's what keeps them together as
a team." The article also quotes the team captain, Andrea Bill,
'01, on Law's dedication to getting to know her teams as individuals:
"The team is C. J.'s second family. She has forty-one riders and
four kids. I don't know how she balances her time." All the World's a Stage Holger Teschke, Five College Distinguished
Visiting Professor of Theatre Arts, will open the exhibition Critical
Graphics of the Weimar Period with a lecture and a staged reading of
Bertolt Brecht's Reader for Those Who Live in Cities at the Vancouver
Art Gallery in June. The exhibition will travel to galleries in Los
Angeles, Chicago, and New York. In addition, Teschke will direct a stage
reading from the works of the German-Jewish philosopher Walter Benjamin
for the opening of the Jewish Museum in Berlin in September 2001. Memorial Service to Be Held for Jean Sudrann June 2 A memorial service for Jean Sudrann '39, Professor Emeritus of English and a member of the MHC faculty for thirty-seven years, will be held June 2 at 3 pm in Abbey Chapel. Sudrann specialized in nineteenth- and twentieth-century English literature. She contributed to the life of the College in numerous ways, serving on all the major committees of the faculty, advising countless students, and three times serving as chair of the English department. After her retirement in 1984, she participated generously in the work of the Alumnae Association. Sudrann was awarded an honorary doctorate of humane letters by the College in 1989. She died May 9 at Holyoke Hospital at the age of eighty-one. |
