Indira Peterson, professor and chair of Asian studies at Mount Holyoke, and John Cort of Denison University have corganized the 2001 workshop of the Conference on Religion in South India. The event, which is receiving assistance from the College, will be held at MHC June 14Š17 in honor of Professor John Braisted Carman of Harvard University. Internationally renowned scholars, most of whom are former students of Carman, will read papers on the broad theme of comparative theologies in South Asia. To honor CarmanÕs contributions to the comparative study of world religions, with a regional focus on South Asia/India, the conference will cover a range of religions (Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam, and Christianity) and disciplines (art history, history of religions, anthropology, and literature). Peterson will read a paper on the cultural discourses of the Bethlehem Kuravanji, a Tamil Christian drama from 1800. For more information, email cort@denison.edu.
