Ellis Decision and Alumnae Association
Agreement Announced

Ellis Suspended
President Joanne V. Creighton announced August 17 that she has suspended Professor Joseph Ellis for one year for misrepresenting his military service to students in his course The Vietnam War and American Culture. Creighton’s action came after a full review of the matter by the College’s Faculty Advisory Committee on Appointments, Reappointments, and Promotions. Creighton also strongly rebuked Ellis, a prominent historian who won a Pulitzer Prize earlier this year for his book Founding Brothers: The Revolutionary Generation. He will step down from his endowed chair. The text of President Creighton’s letter to the community regarding this issue, as well as a statement by Ellis, may be found at http://www.mtholyoke.edu/offices/comm/news/.

College and Alumnae Association in Accord
On August 15, President Creighton and Karen M. Hendricks ’76, president of the Alumnae Association, announced a new three-part agreement between the College and the Association. Resolving a dispute between the two organizations regarding fundraising, the interim agreement provides a three-year funding plan for the Association and a new template for College/ Association collaboration in fundraising. In addition, the two presidents agreed to an intensive planning process to build a stronger working relationship between the College and the Association.
