Volunteers Reflect on Their
Second*Saturday Experiences

Hundreds of new MHC students took to the road last Saturday, September 13, to experience the mountains, museums, and community-service opportunities that the Pioneer Valley offers, as part of the Second*Saturday orientation program. Catharine Melhorn, Second*Saturday coordinator and Hammond-Douglass Professor of Music, was pleased that the program, which helps students make off-campus connections, was such a success. Here is a collection of student reflections and photographs that capture the spirit of the day.

“I liked being outdoors and getting dirty; being in a good, healthy place where I believe in the cause and lifestyle; and meeting people who felt the same way.”
—Jenny Paris-Cossu ’07, Food Bank Farm, on helping with the fall harvest at this 60-acre organic coop in Hadley

On the popular Norwottuck Rail Trail
Bike Path

“I liked the team effort while we were cleaning up and the feeling of self-satisfaction when we were done.”

—Danielle Kaufman ’07, Work & Play in Downtown Noho (Northampton), on cleaning up one of the city’s historic churches

At Mount Toby’s summit

“I liked the cause I was helping—knowing I was helping to fix a site that is used to empower girls.”
—Heather White ’07, on Girls, Inc., a Holyoke-based program designed to help adolescent girls develop socially, creatively, and intellectually in a fun and safe environment

At The Arbors, an assisted-living facility for seniors, in Chicopee

“It was nice to be forced to get off campus and to focus on something other than academics for a few hours.”
—Sara Meyer ’07, C & G Hike, a five-mile walk in the Seven Sisters Range
