Is a Success Despite Rain

Hundreds
of new Mount Holyoke students took to the roads on Saturday,
September 18—in spite of the rain—to experience the
recreational and community-service opportunities that the Pioneer
Valley offers, as part of the Second*Saturday orientation program.
Led by upper-class students, faculty, staff, and alumnae, students made quilts
for AIDS/HIV newborns in Ashfield, exercised the dogs at the Dakin Animal Shelter
in Leverett, and helped out at the Old Firehouse Museum in South Hadley. More
than 30 activities were offered—only four were canceled due to the weather.
“Despite the rain, the bus delays, the last-minute project switches, most
students who were able to participate seem to have had excellent experiences,” said
Catharine Melhorn, Hammond-Douglass Professor of Music and faculty coordinator
for Second*Saturday.
“I think this is an extremely valuable project and introduces students
to a side of the valley they might not otherwise see; [Second*Saturday] really
removes them from the ‘bubble’ of MHC,” said one student who
volunteered at Not Bread Alone, a soup kitchen in Amherst.
