"Modern Flappers and Traditional Indians: Policing the Female Body in 1920s Mexico" Lecture by Rick Lopez, assistant professor of history, Amherst College. Lopez will discuss the India Bonita Contest of 1921, which celebrated indigenous beauty and accorded indigenous peoples and aesthetics a central place in the national imagination. Lopez will argue that cultural leaders and the new mass media used the contest and its objectification of female beauty to critique emerging forms of female liberation.
