Goldwater Scholarships for Science and Math
Mount Holyoke students interested in a career in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering are invited to apply for the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarships and Excellence in Education Program. To be eligible, a student must be a current full-time sophomore or junior, a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, and be in the top quarter of her class. For the class of 2002, that means a GPA of 3.64 or greater, and for the class of 2003, a GPA of 3.65 or greater. The scholarship covers tuition and mandatory fees up to $7,500 per year and is renewable for sophomore scholars. Up to 300 awards will be given. Application forms can be downloaded from the Goldwater Web site, http://www.act.org/goldwater. MHC may nominate up to four juniors or sophomores who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents. The internal preliminary application deadline is Monday, October 30. Scholarship information is available from Scott Brown at the Career Development Center.

Truman Scholarships The Truman Scholarships support U.S. citizens who are planning a career in public service after their graduate program, J.D., M.P.P., M.P.H., M.D., and Ph.D. In the past seven years, eleven MHC juniors with a wide variety of career plans have been finalists, and four MHC students have been named scholars. MHC may nominate up to four full-time juniors and up to three additional full-time juniors who spent their first two years at a community or junior college. Students who complete their degree after three years of college may also be nominated as seniors. Truman Scholars receive $3,000 for senior year and up to $13,500 for each of two years of graduate school. Applicants must be committed to a public service career. Spotlight The admission office is preparing to welcome high school seniors and their parents to campus October 15 and 16 for Spotlight 2000. An extra day of Spotlight, October 14, will be devoted to ALANA students, to acquaint them with the wide range of cultural offerings and resources on campus. Spotlighted will be MHC’s academic life, athletic and cocurricular opportunities, and residential living experience. Prospective students will attend a class, spend the night in the dorms, and attend panels and discussion groups. While the admission office maintains primary responsibility for Spotlight, the program’s success is contingent on the assistance of faculty, students, and staff. Admission will call upon students to serve as hosts and on faculty to participate in panel discussions and to welcome students into their classes. Please mark October 14, 15, and 16, on your calendar, and join the admission office in welcoming these special visitors.

Art Bus Friends of Art is sponsoring a bus trip to New York City on Saturday, October 28. The bus leaves from in front of MHC’s art museum at 8:30 am and from NYC at 7 pm. Visit museums, take in a matinee, shop, or just enjoy the sights. Reservations must be received by October 18. $32 for non-Friends of Art, $27 for Friends of Art, and $25 for students. Stop by the art museum for a reservation form and more information.
