“Art and Psychoanalysis: Klein, Milner, Kristeva” Lecture by Janet Sayers, Five College Women’s Studies Research Center associate from the University of Kent. Sayers will contrast ideas about art and psychoanalysis inspired by the writings of Melanie Klein, Marion Milner, and Julia Kristeva and explore the creative inspiration in both sexes through early fantasies about woman as destroyed, receptive, and seducing maternal space. Framed as a reader’s theatre performance, Jipson’s presentation explores the emergence of the kindergarten in the nineteenth century and examines the theme of “maternal pedagogy” in the work of Elizabeth Peabody and other early kindergarten founders.
