Crew
Team Christens Two New Four-Boats
The dedication of two crew boats took place Saturday,
September 18, at Mount Holyoke’s boathouse at Brunelle’s
Marina in South Hadley. The MHC crew team and several alumnae
were present for the christening of two new four-boats: the Grania
O’Malley and the Mary Jo Maydew. Grania O’Malley
is an ancestress of the O’Malley family, who helped found
the MHC crew team in 1975. She was an infamous pirate who sailed
off the coast of Ireland and was hired to fight for Queen Elizabeth
on several occasions. Mary Jo Maydew is the treasurer of the
College and has been instrumental in helping MHC obtain its own
boathouse.
The College recently purchased the land in South
Hadley for this boathouse and is in the process of obtaining
permits.
The construction of the racing four-boat changed
about five years ago. The coxswain is now situated lying down
at the bow of the boat, where she has much greater visibility
and a lowered center of gravity, thereby increasing the boat’s
stability and speed. Now the MHC rowers are up-to-speed when racing fours,
as they did at the ECAC Championships last spring. The Mary
Jo Maydew competed in its inaugural race at these championships,
helping the crew place fifth overall and third among Division
III competition.
