Business Beth Carmichael, MHC’s director of risk
management, recently received the University Risk Management
and Insurance Association’s (URMIA) distinguished
Risk Manager of the Year Award. URMIA’s mission is
to promote the advancement and application of effective
risk management principles and practices in institutions
of higher education.
Musical Note Internationally acclaimed violinist Rachel Barton
Pine has been appointed the artistic director for Musicorda Chamber
Music Institute and Festival. Pine, a Musicorda alumna, replaces
founding artistic director Leopold Teraspulsky, who retired this
summer. Pine has appeared as soloist with many of the world’s
most prestigious ensembles, including the Chicago, Atlanta, St.
Louis, Dallas, and Baltimore symphonies, as well as the Buffalo
and Rochester philharmonics and Philadelphia and Louisville orchestras.
Her latest disc Solo Baroque was released last month.
In Memoriam: Barry Adels, who worked as head of medical services
at Mount Holyoke from 1974 to 1991, died August 19 while in France
on a cruise. Dr. Adels, 71, attended the University of Rochester
where he earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics. He
attended the University of Maryland Medical School and interned
at Boston City Hospital. Upon his retirement from Mount Holyoke,
Dr. Adels settled in Rockport, Massachusetts. He leaves his wife
of 48 years, Jill Haak Adels; three daughters; a sister; and
ten grandchildren. Memorial gifts may be made to Rockport Boy
