Give
to the United Way: Maybe You'll Win a Prize
Faculty,
emeriti, staff, and students have until October 18 to make commitments
to MHC's annual United Way Community Campaign, which benefits
charitable organizations throughout the Pioneer Valley. Anyone
making a contribution by the end of October will be eligible to
win MHC apparel, concert tickets, gift certificates at local shops,
a round of golf at the Orchards, and a number of other prizes
offered by the College as a participation incentive this year.
Whether given in lump
sum or through payroll deduction, designated to a particular agency
or allocated to all 153 programs of the United Way of Pioneer
Valley, every gift is critical to those who rely on services from
Hospice of Western New England, the Boys and Girls Club of Greater
Holyoke, the Pioneer Valley chapter of the American Red Cross,
the Springfield area Salvation Army, and dozens of other local
agencies. For pledge forms or more information, call Irasema Lewis
at x2185.

Lorraine Lacasse met
her husband, Gerry, at the ticket table of a Boy Scout pancake
breakfast eighteen years ago. "It was love at first sight,"
says Lacasse, who has been involved with Gerry, and the Boy Scouts,
ever since. As a financial services project specialist who began
working at Mount Holyoke during its first capital campaign, Lacasse
knows a thing or two about money. And through her volunteer work
with the Boy Scouts, she knows a lot about what a little money
and outreach can do for those in need. She recalls the story of
a boy who delivered a small fruit basket to an elderly woman at
Christmas. "She cried when I gave her the basket," said
the scout. "I didn't know what to do, so I just said Merry
Christmas.'" Lacasse helps ensure that the Boy Scouts and
other service organizations continue to provide needed services
in the Pioneer Valley by making financial contributions, through
payroll deduction, to Mount Holyoke's annual United Way campaign.
"Because of personal
history, I would support the Boy Scouts, the Red Cross, and many
other organizations supported by United Way anyway," says
Lacasse, "and I know there are so many others that need help,
too. I don't have to look very hard to find someone worse off
than I am. The members of United Way's board know where the need
is greatest and allocate my extra funds accordingly."
