Mount Holyoke French professor Margaret Switten and Robert Eisenstein, director of the Five College Early Music Program, take a look at a medieval manuscript page using the CD-ROM they developed.

And the Finalists Are Teaching Medieval Lyric with Modern Technology, a CD-ROM created by professors Margaret Switten and Robert Eisenstein that approaches the medieval lyric as a fusion of music and words, has been named a finalist in the sixth annual Massachusetts Interactive Media Council (MIMC) Awards. Switten, a French professor who specializes in medieval language and poetry, and Eisenstein, director of the Five College Early Music Program, designed the interdisciplinary CD with the support of a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities Teaching with Technology Program. Featuring a repertoire that spans the eleventh to the fourteenth centuries, the CD includes a depth of material not readily available in this country. Along with its numerous recordings, the CD also contains modern musical and textual transcriptions, pronunciation guides, brief commentaries, and essays by noted scholars to help educators use and adapt the content for their own purposes. The project was submitted for the award by Gravity Switch, Inc., which developed the software for the CD. The companyÕs team included Christine E. Henriques Õ95, who served as creative director; company president and project manager Jason Mark; and senior developer Rob Archer. The MIMC Awards are considered the highest honor given for the creation of Web sites, interactive media, and other technologies in New England. More than 1,300 industry professionals are expected to attend the awards show, scheduled for October 15 in Boston. As a finalist, the CD will be prominently mentioned in the award showÕs Web site, program, press announcements, and in a presentation video shown during the event.
