Get Set for Family Weekend October 26Ð28

With on-campus opportunities that include master classes in foreign policy, virtual tours of MHC construction projects, stargazing, a horse show, and a regatta, and off-campus options that range from braving a roller coaster at Six Flags amusement park to visiting the Basketball Hall of Fame, Family Weekend 2001 (October 26–28) promises to keep everyone busy and well entertained. In fact, it may take several weekends to recover from the whirlwind of activity.

Among the many events are a drum program of traditional African songs, dances, and costumes; a welcome by President Joanne V. Creighton and panel with faculty members about how changing architecture and landscape enhances MHC's academic program; a talent showcase featuring MHC's performance and cultural organizations; and a performance by the MHC Jazz Ensemble. Recreational and athletic highlights range from a three-mile hike, canoeing on Upper Lake, a Seven Sisters crew championship regatta, and a volleyball match against Wheaton College to a fun run (or walk) and an intercollegiate horse show.

Visitors can learn about library research in the twenty-first century, listen to presentations by Weed summer research fellows; stargaze at Williston Observatory; take a geology field trip; and attend master classes on topics that include American Foreign Policy After September 11, 2001; Sex, Drugs, and Videotapes: What Animal Learning Psychology Reveals About the Human Condition; Why Are There Churches on Sesame Street, but None in Mr. Rogers's Neighborhood?; and Facing the Challenges of Globalization.

New this year is a Friday dessert reception featuring creations by Blanchard's own chef Jeff Sadowsky, a.k.a. Jeff the Chef. "This event answers family requests for more opportunities to meet daughters' friends and their families, as well as the MHC community," said Beth Gibney Boulden, associate director of student programs.

On the spiritual and musical front, weekend highlights include a Jumma prayer meeting; a Shabbat service; Japanese tea ceremonies; Buddhist meditation; a concert featuring the Glee Club, Concert
Choir, and family/daughter choir; and a dance program.

Lest the weekend fade from memory, a sale of plants, T-shirts, and sweatshirts at Talcott Greenhouse will allow family members to bring home a memento of their fall weekend at MHC.
