Theatre Department Season to Open with The Night of the Iguana

Tennessee Williams’s powerful drama about the terrifying isolation of loneliness will kick off the MHC theatre arts department’s 2001–2002 season beginning Thursday, October 25, in Rooke Theatre at 8 pm. The Night of the Iguana will also be performed October 26, 27, and 28.

The original 1961 Broadway production of The Night of the Iguana won both a Drama Critics’ Circle Award and a Tony Award for best play, and a film of the play featured Ava Gardner, Deborah Kerr, and Richard Burton. Set in a broken-down Mexican hotel, the play explores the interactions between a lusty widow, an emotionally unstable clergyman, and a spiritual woman, who are thrown together by chance, as a severe storm rages.

The production is directed by MHC theatre arts professor Joyce Devlin, and set designs are by Malea L. Jochim ’02. Leandro Soto, visiting assistant professor of theatre arts, designed the costumes for the show, and lighting and sound design are by John Howard.

Check the CSJ calendar for the schedule of performances of The Night of the Iguana. Tickets are $5 general admission and $3 for students and senior citizens. Seating is free on opening night for students with and ID. Box office hours, beginning Monday, October 22, are 3 to 6 pm daily and one hour prior to the performance. For reservations, call x2406.
