Eva Nyerges '07 Wins National Environmental Youth Award

Eva Nyerges '07 has been selected by the federal Environmental Protection Agency as one of ten winners of the 2003 President's Environmental Youth Awards. She received her award on Tuesday, October 21, in Washington, D.C.

Nyerges, of Danville, Kentucky, was recognized for her work in founding a chapter of the environmental group Roots & Shoots at Danville High School. Roots & Shoots is the Jane Goodall Institute's international environmental and humanitarian program for young people. Its mission is to foster respect and compassion for all living things, to promote understanding of all cultures and beliefs, and to inspire each individual to take action to make the world a better place for the environment, animals, and the human community.

Nyerges was inspired to help found the group after reading Goodall's book Reason for Hope. Roots & Shoots started a recycling program, made schoolwide announcements about the history of Earth Day, and partnered with students and faculty at Centre College to begin environmental projects.

The President's Environmental Youth Awards program, created in 1971, recognizes young people across the United States for projects that demonstrate their commitment to the environment. Young people in all 50 states and U.S. territories are eligible to participate, and one winner is chosen in each of the EPA's ten regions.
