Weekend Set for October 31-November 2
Family Weekend, scheduled for October 31November
2, promises plenty of activities on campus for Mount Holyoke students
and their families. Annual traditions such as open houses, hikes,
sporting events, plant sales, talent shows, concerts, fun runs,
and religious services abound.
Learning opportunities include Weed Summer Research
Fellow presentations on topics ranging from race and identity
in the Dominican Republic to the misconceptions surrounding homeschooling.
Master classes include Imminent Missions to Mars: Unlocking
the Secrets of the Red Planet taught by Darby Dyar, associate
professor of astronomy and geology; Celibacy and Faith:
A View of the Shaker World Through Their Art taught by Jane
Crosthwaite, professor of religion; Terrorism: Russia as
Its Cradle taught by Constantine Pleshakov, visiting assistant
professor of Russian and Eurasian studies; and Culture,
Country, Region, World: Creating a Modern History of East Asia
taught by Jonathan Lipman, professor of history and chair of Asian
studies.
Education is balanced with entertainment throughout
the weekend. Friday nights lineup includes a dessert reception
with MHCs president Joanne V. Creighton, a staged reading
of Heiner Muellers Hamlet Machine, a performance by improv
troupe The Villa Jidiots, and a Haunted House. On Saturday, more
than 200 students, faculty, and community musicians will perform
in a one-hour showcase concert. A special chorus of parents, students,
siblings, and friends will perform Mack Wilbergs Saints
Bound for Heaven as the concerts grand finale.
