Family Weekend Set for October 31-November 2

Family Weekend, scheduled for October 31–November 2, promises plenty of activities on campus for Mount Holyoke students and their families. Annual traditions such as open houses, hikes, sporting events, plant sales, talent shows, concerts, fun runs, and religious services abound.

Learning opportunities include Weed Summer Research Fellow presentations on topics ranging from race and identity in the Dominican Republic to the misconceptions surrounding homeschooling. Master classes include “Imminent Missions to Mars: Unlocking the Secrets of the Red Planet” taught by Darby Dyar, associate professor of astronomy and geology; “Celibacy and Faith: A View of the Shaker World Through Their Art” taught by Jane Crosthwaite, professor of religion; “Terrorism: Russia as Its Cradle” taught by Constantine Pleshakov, visiting assistant professor of Russian and Eurasian studies; and “Culture, Country, Region, World: Creating a Modern History of East Asia” taught by Jonathan Lipman, professor of history and chair of Asian studies.

Education is balanced with entertainment throughout the weekend. Friday night’s lineup includes a dessert reception with MHC’s president Joanne V. Creighton, a staged reading of Heiner Mueller’s Hamlet Machine, a performance by improv troupe The Villa Jidiots, and a Haunted House. On Saturday, more than 200 students, faculty, and community musicians will perform in a one-hour showcase concert. A special chorus of parents, students, siblings, and friends will perform Mack Wilberg’s Saints Bound for Heaven as the concert’s grand finale.
