Rediscovering the Americas in Rio Roberto Márquez, William R. Kenan Professor of Latin American and Caribbean Studies,has received an invitation to participate in an international Colóquio Americanidade Compartilhada (Shared Americanity) to be held at the Universidade Federal Fluminense in Niterói, in Río de Janeiro, Brazil, November 9 and 10. Márquez's contribution to the proceedings will address the issue of “Continental Integration and Cultural Diversity” in the Americas. Márquez delivered the keynote address at Afro-Latinos and the Issue of Race in the New Millennium, a Brooklyn College symposium held October 21.

Career Update Scott Brown, director of the Career Development Center, will give a talk titled “Learning Across the Campus: How College Facilitates the Development of Wisdom” this month at Bates College. In the past six months, he has spoken at the Eastern Association of Colleges and Employers in Seven Springs, Pennsylvania; the Small College Career Alliance in Williamstown; and the New England Association of Cooperative Education Association in Mystic. Upcoming presentations by Brown include “Career Centers and the Development of Wisdom” at the American College Personnel Association national meeting in Boston in March and “Learning Portfolios: Connecting Career Centers to the Educational Mission” at the National Association of Colleges and Employers national meeting in Las Vegas in May.
