COMMUNITY Beat the Flu The health center is offering two
flu immunization clinics for students, faculty, and staff. Immunizations
are given by appointment only on a first-come, first-served basis. Schedule
an appointment by calling x2121 (use option 2). Flu clinics will be
held Friday, December 1, and Friday, December 8, during regular clinic
hours. The charge for the immunization is $10. You will be billed through
the College.
Study the World's Oceans with the Williams College/Mystic
Seaport Program The Williams-Mystic Program includes a ten-day off-shore
Atlantic voyage, a ten-day investigation of the Pacific coast, and intensive
research at Mystic Seaport, the nation's largest maritime museum.

for more information. The Mystic Program is part of the Twelve College
Exchange, and all applicants must complete and submit both a Mystic
application and a Twelve College Exchange application form to the dean
of the College's office by December 15. Five College Coastal & Marine Sciences Program,
E. J. Murphy Fund E. J. Murphy Fund Scholarships offer up to $500
to junior and senior students for financial assistance with research-oriented
project expenses during the academic year and support for presenting
papers, attending conferences, or workshops. The application deadline
is November 2. Applications should include a cover letter and transcript;
a half-page typed statement discussing present and future educational
interests, long-term goals, how the scholarship will be used toward
these goals, and the research project, paper or workshop/conferences
you will be attending; and a letter of support from the project superviser.

mkoenig@science.smith.edu. Lecture on Climate Change The Five College Coastal
and Marine Sciences Program and the Smith College Environmental Science
and Policy Program are cosponsoring a talk by Tim Bates of the NOAA
(National Oceanic and Atomospheric Administration) Pacific Marine Environmental
Laboratory. His lecture titled Climate ChangeInternational
Efforts to Better Define the Role of Atomospheric Particles will
take place Thursday, November 9, at 4:15 pm, at Smith College, McConnell,
Room B05. Bates will also discuss NOAA internships. A reception will
follow the lecture. Bates is a chemical oceanographer whose current
research activities include the role of the ocean in the chemical composition
of the atmosphere and climate change, the climatic forcing of aerosol
particles, and the biogeochemical cycling of sulfur, nitrogen, and carbon
between the ocean, atmosphere, and the biosphere. Annual Student Research Symposium Five College students who received grants from the Five College Coastal and Marine Sciences Program will present the results of their work at the annual research student symposium Monday, November 13, at 7 pm, at Smith College's McConnell Hall. Refreshments will be served. |
