Musical Feast in Honor of Founder's Day

The
November feast day of Saint Cecilia, patron saint of music, has
stimulated the composition of odes and extended musical works
for more than four centuries, and now two Cecilian odesHandel's
oratorio-length Ode for St. Cecilia's Day (1736) and Michael
Hurd's miniature "St. Cecilia's Day" (1986)
for female chorus and pianowill be performed in honor of
the founding of Mount Holyoke in November of 1837. A Founder's
Day concert featuring the Mount Holyoke College Glee Club, the
Rutgers University (men's) Glee Club, College organist Larry
Schipull, members of the Arcadia Players baroque orchestra, soprano
Mary Ellen Callahan, and tenor William Hite, is set for Sunday,
November 3, at 2:30 pm in Abbey chapel. The concert will also
include a number of other works in praise of music, singers, and
"heavenly harmony," including Britten's Missa Brevis
in D. Catharine Melhorn, Hammond-Douglass Professor of Music at
MHC, directs the MHC group, and Patrick Gardner conducts the Rutgers
Glee Club, one of America's oldest and most distinguished
male choruses.
