Alumnae Conference Begins November 12
In
the year 2005, one out of every five American women will be
a Latina, according to Yasmin Davidds, “We are strong,
powerful women—capable of influencing all social and
economic issues, including some we may have never considered,” said
Davidds, keynote speaker at the fifth triennial Latina Alumnae
Conference that will take place the weekend of November 12-14.
Titled Our Journey: Where We Were, Where
We Are, Where We Are Going, the conference will bring together Latina
alumnae, students, staff, and faculty for opportunities to build
support, empowerment, mentoring, and friendships among the College’s
Latina/o community.
Davidds, best-selling writer and author of Empowering Latinas: Breaking Boundaries,
Freeing Lives, was recognized last year as a “leading Latina” by Hispanic
Magazine. Other conference highlights include a reading by award-winning
poet, playwright, and arts educator Magdalena Gomez and a talk on sexuality,
gender, and resistance to stereotypes by V. Muñoz, associate professor
of psychology at Wells College, The keynote address will be followed by a dinner
and entertainment by La Perfecta, featuring Latin dance music. These events are
open to the public.
The conference is cochaired by Danielle R. Cuén '05 and Norma Iris
De la Cruz '06, student leaders of MEChA and La Unidad, and cosponsored
by the Alumnae Association. Many other departments and student organizations
on campus have helped fund the conference. “It is through conferences such
as these that one can truly experience the vibrancy of Mount Holyoke’s
multicultural community,” said Alumnae Association executive director W.
Rochelle Calhoun '83.
