Defying the stereotype
of a beauty pageant contestant, Mamta Dass '06 cares about
more than her makeup and hairstylemuch more. She is an accomplished
practitioner of a number of Indian art forms, from the kathak,
an Indian dance form performed with ankle bells, to the sitar,
perhaps the most well known of the Indian instruments. Dass, who
describes community service as one of her "primary interests,"
has performed as a dancer and musician regularly at senior citizen
centers since her high school days and has participated in concerts
to benefit the victims of the September 11 terrorist attacks.
An honor student at Cambridge Rindge and Latin School in Cambridge,
Massachusetts, where she garnered numerous awards and scholarships
upon graduation, Dass plans to major in biological sciences at
MHC and aspires to become a heart surgeon. "I think you can
have both beauty and brains," she says.
Although she is serious
about her studies and about helping others, Dass "sometimes
just likes to have fun." And since she was a young child
living in India, the future physician has viewed beauty pageants
as a "way to have fun and fulfill some personal goals,"
she says. In preparation for her bid to become Miss Massachusetts
USA, "fun" has involved everything from weight training
and "improving [her] overall health" to learning the
proper way to walk in a glittery red evening gown. In pursuit
of the state crown, Dass will compete November 23 and 24 at the
Marriott Hotel in Quincy, Massachusetts. The winner will represent
Massachusetts in the nationally televised Miss USA pageant. Dass
invites members of the MHC community to attend Saturday's preliminary
and Sunday's final competition. Tickets to both events are available
by calling 781-320-3500.
