The Center for Global Initiatives (CGI) recently welcomed
Anita Deeg-Carlin to its staff as coordinator for educational opportunities
abroad. Deeg-Carlin brings extensive experience to the job. The daughter of
German and Swiss parents, she was raised in a multicultural environment. She
interned in Uganda as an undergraduate, served as a Peace Corps volunteer and
trainer for four years in Madagascar, and then earned a master’s degree
in watershed science from Colorado State University. She worked most recently
in Costa Rica as program director for a cross-cultural ecology program run
by the Academy at Swift River in Cummington, Massachusetts.
Given the pressing nature of current global issues, the promotion and expansion
of learning abroad options is an important part of the CGI’s agenda. Deeg-Carlin’s
main charge is to improve student access to international internships, and to
establish and institutionalize high-profile internships that will be open exclusively
to Mount Holyoke students. She is working with members of the larger Mount Holyoke
community (faculty, alumnae, parents, trustees) to establish internships abroad,
in the private, public, and not-for-profit sectors. She will act as “matchmaker
and gatekeeper” for these opportunities, ensuring that both sponsor and
student maximize the benefits from the internship. For example, she is curently
working with the father of a Chinese student at Mount Holyoke; he is looking
for a student to intern in his company in China writing and editing corporate
publications in English.
Eva Paus, director of the CGI,
is extremely pleased to have Deeg-Carlin on board. “An international internship,
like study abroad, can be a life-changing experience, as a student immerses herself
in a culture different from her own,” she said. “Anita is superbly
qualified to cultivate international internship sponsors; match them with the
best students, given the skills and expectations needed for each internship;
and explore with students how their learning experiences abroad fit with their
overall educational pathway at Mount Holyoke.”
