Art Show to Open November 29
The third annual Art@Work exhibition,
featuring the work of Mount Holyoke staff, will open November
29 at Kendade Hall. Shelley Richard, assistant to the vice president
for finance and administration, got the idea for the exhibition
from several other local colleges, including Smith. “So
many of us create things outside of our jobs here at Mount Holyoke,” she
said. “There are many unseen talents on campus and the
art exhibit is a great opportunity to highlight our staff.”
Richard formed a committee two years ago to launch the first Art@Work exhibition;
the first two events proved so popular that the show is becoming a tradition. “The
exhibition is catching on, each year our participation rate is growing, and people
are starting to talk about and anticipate the event.”
There are quite a few repeat contributors. Some, including Joe Calabrese, Gayle
Higgins, and Claudette Crochiere, as well as committee members Laurie Kamins,
Debbie Piotrowski, Lorraine Gendron, Peggy Warwick, Debbie Wright, and Richard
are showing for the third time. So far there are 40 items to display, including
photographs and paintings, colored-pencil drawings, pen and ink, quilting, woodworking,
decoupage plates, counted cross-stitch, flower arrangement, and sculpture. “We
try to encourage all kinds of art,” said Richard, “including written
work such as poetry and calligraphy. This year we’ll be including a model
of a working locomotive, a wood and metal decorative box, and matted and framed
vintage items.”
For the first time the Art@Work exhibition will feature a group submission of
handknit scarves. The group was taught by Kathleen Norton and Judy Allen during
a Human Resources Brown Bag Lunch Seminar and continues to meet every other Friday.
New members are always welcome.
The exhibition will be mounted in the Marion Craig Potter ’49 atrium in
Kendade Hall November 29 through December 10. An opening reception will be held
November 29 from 4 to 6 pm. Musical entertainment will be provided by Kimberly
Kedziorek and Talya Westbrook, both from the development office, and Christopher
Rust from LITS.
