"Reimagining Morality: Women, Sexuality,
and Theology in Early Twentieth-Century America" Lecture by Kristin
Du Mez, University of Notre Dame. Du Mez describes a group of
Protestant women who constructed elaborate critiques of male-inspired
Christian theology. Drawing particularly on women's experiences
of sexuality, they fashioned woman-centered theologies, hoping
to overturn traditional notions of Christian womanhood and, ultimately,
to reconstruct the foundations of morality. By examining both
the achievements and frustrations of these women, and by placing
their lives and work in the context of first-wave feminism and
the history of twentieth-century Christianity, this study illuminates
the historical roots of the contemporary moral landscape in America.
