Upcoming
Celebrations…
The Copper Beech Turns 100
To celebrate the hundredth birthday of the beloved copper beech
tree located near Dwight Hall, the Botanic Garden and the Environmental
Action Coalition are cosponsoring a celebration Thursday, December
9, from 11:30 am to 2:30 pm. Planted in 1904 by Asa Kinney,
former director of the Botanic Garden and professor of botany,
to commemorate the birth of his daughter Elizabeth Tucker Kinney ’24,
the copper beech is a favorite feature of the MHC landscape.
Paper will be provided so that community members can write
notes to or about the tree. These notes will be placed in the
MHC archives, where the tree already has its own file. The
entire MHC community is invited to attend. Hot drinks and birthday
cake will be served. For more information, contact Ellen Shukis,
director of the Botanic Garden and Talcott Greenhouse, at x2199.
Premiere by MHC Professors
On December 11 at 7 pm, The
Christmas Witnesses: A Cycle of Seven Carols, composed by professor of music Allen Bonde with text
by professor of English Robert B. Shaw, will have its world
premiere at the Central Massachusetts Concert Choir Festival
in Dudley, Massachusetts. The 20-minute commissioned work will
be performed by members of various singing groups from Shepherd
Hill Regional High School. Under the direction of Connie Galli,
the work will feature Dr. Bonde as piano accompanist and Mara
Bonde ’91, his daughter, as guest soloist. The conclusion
to the cycle of carols will be sung by the combined festival
singers.
Winterfest 2004
Great food and great conversation highlight the annual Winterfest
celebration, Mount Holyoke’s holiday party of food and
fellowship for faculty and staff. Set for Wednesday, December
15, from 11:30 am to
1:30 pm in Mary Woolley Hall’s Chapin Auditorium, the event
also offers the opportunity for members of the Mount Holyoke
community to support some of the College’s neighbors in
need. Offices will close during Winterfest so that all staff
may attend. Kendall and the library will be kept open, since
Winterfest is held in the middle of exam week. The Office of
the President and Staff Council sponsor the celebration, which
includes a hearty lunch buffet.
As in past years, the College is encouraging donations to local charities.
This year, the College urges faculty and staff to support the Food Bank of
Western Massachusetts, Open Pantry, and Providence Ministries by donating canned
or other nonperishable food items.
