African
Studies Certificate
Seniors who wish to apply for a Five College African Studies
Certificate should submit a preliminary application to Professor
Holly Hanson, Skinner 314, by Thursday, December 2. These will
be reviewed by the Five College African Studies Council on December
3, so that prospective certificate recipients will know whether
they have met the requirements of the certificate before they
begin their last semester. Applications are available on the
African American and African Studies bulletin board next to Skinner
312. The African Studies Certificate requires six courses that
have more than 50 percent Africa content, including at least
one course in the humanities, one in the social sciences, and
one that provides a historical overview, and proficiency at the
intermediate level in an indigenous or colonial language of Africa.
Students must have received a grade of B or higher in all courses
proposed for the certificate. Students who wish to apply for
a certificate should address questions to professors Samba Gadjigo,
John Lemly, or Holly Hanson.
Panel on Taking Self-Scheduled Exams:
A Crucial Event for First-Year Students
Tuesday, December
7, 7:30 pm, Hooker Auditorium This session will offer information and discussion on procedures
for taking self-scheduled exams, the role of the honor code,
and strategies for planning and preparation. Panel participants
will be student advisers, exam coordinators, and Leah B. Glasser,
dean of first-year studies.
Student Extensions/Incompletes
Faculty legislation stipulates that “an instructor may
report a student’s work as incomplete only if the student
has been given an excuse by the director of the Health Center
or the dean of the College because of an emergency.” This
means that instructors may not accept exams, or papers due in
lieu of exams, after noon on Tuesday, December 21, unless authorized
by the director of the Health Center for medical reasons, or
one of the academic deans in the dean of the College’s
office for unforeseen emergencies. All other course work must
be turned in by the last day of classes. Again, the deadline
for students to request an extension for incomplete work is Tuesday,
December 21, at noon.
