The
Capitol Steps to Perform December 9

|
WFCR (88.5 FM), public radio
for western New England and a National Public Radio (NPR) affiliate,
will present the zany music and satire of the Capitol Steps Thursday,
December 9, at 7:30 pm in Mary Woolley’s Chapin Auditorium.
The troupe, who have performed to a sold-out house for the last
several years, have put together a new show that includes their
hits “Papa’s Got a Brand New Baghdad” and “On
the Sunni Side of Tikrit.”
The musical comedy troupe is composed of congressional staffers-turned-comedians
who satirize the people and places that once employed them. The group’s
performance is sponsored by Mount Holyoke and the Valley Advocate. Proceeds from
the event benefit the programs and services of WFCR.
The troupe was born in 1981 when three staffers for Senator Charles Percy were
planning entertainment for a holiday party. Dig-ging into the headlines of the
day, they created song parodies and skits that conveyed a special brand of satirical
humor. The group has gone on to record more than 20 albums and perform more than
500 live shows per year. The Capitol Steps has been featured on NBC, CBS, ABC,
PBS, and NPR.
Tickets, which are general admission, are priced from $20 to $50. Producer’s
Circle tickets include a postperformance reception. Tickets may be purchased
through the UMass Fine Arts Center box office at 545-2511 or 800-999-UMAS. For
