Mount Holyoke United Way Campaign Exceeds Goal

Mount Holyoke faculty, staff, students, and emeriti rose to the occasion this fall, giving generously and putting the College's United Way Community Campaign over the top. The annual fall employee fund drive, administered by the United Way of the Pioneer Valley, surpassed the goal of $35,000 by more than $5,000. The total raised was $40,166, and 213 College employees contributed to the drive, which supports 153 nonprofit programs in twenty-five local communities. Donations ranged from $2 to $4,500.

President Joanne V. Creighton praised the MHC community for its civic-mindedness and caring. "It is testimony to our esprit de corps and culture of giving back that we were able to meet and exceed this year's United Way goal."

Anyone making a contribution by the end of October was eligible to win prizes offered by the College as a participation incentive this year. The lucky winners and their prizes were Robert Shilkret, professor of psychology and education (a round of golf for four at the Orchards with golf carts); Eugenia Herbert, Professor Emeritus of History (brunch for four at the Willits-Hallowell Center); Professor of Computer Science Claude Fennema, Associate Director of the Career Development Center Daryl Gehman, Associate Professor of Biological Sciences Rachel Fink, and Language Lab Coordinator Jean Dixon ($5 lunch gift certificates to Safford); Joan Perez, senior administrative assistant in the physical education and athletics and dance departments (Mount Holyoke sweatshirt); Susan Alston, individual gifts officer, and Steven Ellenburg, professor of politics (MHC baseball caps); Emily Weir, managing director of print and online magazines for the Alumnae Association (Mount Holyoke T-shirt); Judith Allen, director of experiential learning (botanic garden T-shirt); Michael Buckley, superintendent of general services (Mount Holyoke tote bag); Susan Desjardins, administrative assistant in dining services ($10 gift certificate to the Thirsty Mind); Ajay Sinha, associate professor of art ($25 gift certificate to Village Chocolates); Janice Albano, associate treasurer ($25 gift certificate to Carey's Flower Shop); Ann Routhier, payroll specialist ($10 gift certificate to Tailgate); Holly Hanson, assistant professor of history ($25 gift certificate to Stems Flower Shop); Dining Services checker Marjorie Cassidy (a birthday cake); and Professor of Religion Jane Crosthwaite and Supervisor of Custodians Michael Alexander (reserved seats at Vespers).
