New Orleans Fundraiser

After an ambitious fall semester, the Mount Holyoke College Glee Club is preparing for its annual tour. This year the group will fly to New Orleans for the weekend of Palm Sunday (April 5-9) and perform at Loyola University and several high schools and churches.

In the past, choirs from Mount Holyoke have undertaken many successful tours around the world and traveled to South America, Canada, central and eastern Europe, Sweden, and England. This will be the Glee Club's first tour of the south-central United States and the first visit to New Orleans for most of its members.

According to Catharine Melhorn, the director of the Glee Club, "We are working very hard to raise funds so that all qualified singers can afford the trip." On Saturday, February 25, the Glee Club will host a Mardi Gras Breakfast at Seasons Restaurant in Amherst. The first of many fundraising projects, the benefit will begin at 9 AM and will feature a buffet of a variety of specialties, including omelettes and Belgian waffles, for $9.95 (adults). Entertainment will include jazz piano, classical guitar, and the Mount Holyoke College Chamber Singers.

Melhorn invites all members of the community "to sample the fare at one of the Pioneer Valley's favorite restaurants, enjoy live music, and lend their support to a great collegiate choir."
