Assistantship in French Secondary School

The French government is offering an assistantship in a French secondary school in 1996-1997 to one graduating Mount Holyoke student. The assistantship requires twelve hours of teaching weekly--in most cases, group conversation on American literature and civilization. The salary for 1995-1996 is approximately 5.304 francs per month for eight months, plus free tuition at the nearest university. A very good knowledge of French is required. Applicants should be French majors or minors, or romance languages and literatures majors with French as primary language. Interested students should contact Mr. Gadjigo in the French department. Deadline for return of applications to the French Department is Thursday, November 30.

Sign Up for Health Professions Adviser

Students interested in a career in one of the health professions are advised to request a health professions adviser in addition to their regular academic adviser. The health professions adviser assists students in selecting undergraduate courses and preparing to apply to health professions schools: medical, dental, veterinary, public health, nursing, and other allied health professions. Forms are available in the registrar's office, the Office of the Academic Deans, and the Career Development Center. The handout "Planning for a Career in the Health Professions" is available in the Career Development Center. Open Health-Advising Sessions

Faculty members of the Committee on the Health Professions will be available to discuss course requirements and application timetables for students interested in a career in the health professions Thursday, November 9, 12:30-1:30 PM in 103 Carr Laboratory; and Monday, November 13, noon-1 PM in 420 Clapp Laboratory.

Reading at the Odyssey Bookshop

Author Jonathan Harr will read from and sign his new book, A Civil Action, on Friday, November 3, at 7:30 PM at the Odyssey Bookshop. Nominated for the National Book Award, A Civil Action chronicles a true story that takes the reader deep into the inner workings of the law. Harr, who has written for The New Yorker and the New York Times Magazine, lives and works in Northampton.

A New Type of Nancy Drew

Mabel Maney, author of the Nancy Clue mystery series, will perform her third and newest mystery: Nancy Clue and the Hardly boys in A Ghost in the Closet. If you like mysteries, cultural studies, or gay/lesbian studies, then you don't want to miss this event at the Odyssey Bookshop, Saturday, November 4, from 7 to 9 PM.

Musicorda Brings Back St. Petersburg String Quartet

Musicorda will sponsor the return of the internationally acclaimed St. Petersburg String Quartet for a special scholarship benefit of all-Russian music. The performance will consist of quartets by Borodin, Shostakovich, and Nadarejshvili, and will be held in Chapin Auditorium on Monday, November 13, at 8:00 PM, with a preconcert Informance at 7:15 PM. Tickets are $15 for general admission and $8 for students, and can be obtained by calling Musicorda at 538-2590, or from the Odyssey Book Shop, South Hadley; Broadside Bookshop, Northampton; and William Burrows, florist, Longmeadow. Tickets will be available at the door.

Senior Giving Polling

Mark your calendars! Now is the time to submit your brilliant idea for the class gift. Polling tables will be in Blanchard Campus Center on November 14 and 15 from 10 AM-4 PM. You must give to participate: submit your gift to your dorm's senior giving reps or at the polling tables.

D102 History of Life

In addition to officially registering for D102, students must apply electronically to request admission to the class. Students who do not have email must apply for an account no later than three weeks before advising (November 9). User Services is unable to accommodate late requests. Each student must use her own computer account. Only requests received after 8 AM computer time, November 9, will be considered. Enrollment will be limited to sixty.

Study Abroad Financial Aid

Financial aid for study abroad for all or part of the 1996-1997 academic year are due in the International Affairs Office December 1. This deadline does not include the British university exchanges, for which applications were due November 1. Students who receive financial aid at Mount Holyoke (including international students) are eligible. Aid is limited, and awarded on a competitive basis with priority given to eligible students who can clearly demonstrate that a period of study abroad is an essential and integral part of their academic program. Take Home Christmas Vespers

Christmas Vespers Through the Years is a collection in two separate volumes of the most outstanding vespers performances by Mount Holyoke choral and instrumental groups between 1983 and 1994. Each CD is $15.95 and are available through the Mount Holyoke music department office, campus bookstore, or the Odyssey Bookshop.
