Human Resources to Review "Performance Management"

This academic year, the Human Resources (HR) staff will continue work on the employee compensation project. Phase two of the project, to be started this fall, includes a review of how annual pay increases are distributed and how each employee's work performance is evaluated by his or her supervisor.

Employees will have several opportunities to make known their ideas and preferences about pay distribution and performance assessment, beginning with focus group meetings to be held September 17, 19, 23, and 26. Times and locations will be announced in the CSJ calendar. A task force will be formed to consider ideas raised at the focus groups, as well as information arising from HR staff research.

The task force will investigate a variety of alternatives to the current system of across-the-board pay raises. According to Ann Chenier, compensation specialist, options include merit raises, bonuses, and other reward and recognition programs. The task force will also look at various ways to assess individual work performance.

The results of the performance management review will be implemented in fiscal year 1997-98. This work is being done in conjunction with the new Salary Administration Program and with the College's work on strategic planning.

Phase one of the compensation project was completed in June. It produced the new salary program, a system of fourteen grades and associated salary ranges. Analysis regarding placement of individual salaries within grade ranges continues, and recommendations, where appropriate, will be made for the 1997-98 budget cycle. The final step in phase one, distributing a list of job titles and associated grades, will happen later this month, according to Chenier.
