If there is a fire in a residence hall or an academic building, dial 1-911 and pull the fire alarm. Use the stairs, never the elevator; walk quickly but do not run. Never go back into a building unless told to do so by the Fire Department or Public Safety.
In warm weather, people may be tempted to leave their windows open. Especially with ground floor and basement rooms, the possibility of intruders or theft is very high when windows are unlocked. Whenever members of the community leave their rooms or offices, and at night, they should make sure that the windows are closed and locked securely. If window locks are not in place, or are not functioning properly, please call Buildings and Grounds to have the locks replaced as soon as possible.
Each residence hall has an access phone near the main entrance. This phone is for the use of students, staff, faculty, and guests to contact residents to arrange for access to the hall.
Public Safety will be strictly enforcing parking regulations and is requesting the cooperation of the entire campus community. Copies of the regulations are available in the Parking Office in Central Services. If you have questions about parking, call x2514.
There are nineteen emergency phones on campus, identified by the blue light above them. When the receiver is lifted, a signal is sent directly to the Public Safety dispatcher, who will send an officer to that location. From the Canoe House phone, it is necessary to dial x2304.
The campus post office will be reorganizing in order to improve mail service for Mount Holyoke students and staff. To assist in this process, the staff, in conjunction with the South Hadley post office, asks that students attach the following four-digit codes to the zip code of their mailing address:

The Center for Ecological Technology estimates that the average household gets about eighty-four pounds of third-class junk mail annually. That represents an estimated nine million trees being used annually for junk mail that largely goes unread by the recipient. The center says that consumers can stop most of the mail by simply requesting that their names be taken off mailing lists. The CET said that a postcard request to the Direct Marketing Association's Mail Preference Service, P.O. Box 9008, Farmington, NY 11735, asking to be taken off the list, will accomplish the goal. Once listed as deleted, the consumer will receive no junk mail from about 70 percent of the nation's mailers for five years. For more information call CET at 1-800-238-1221.

These forums have the twofold purpose of helping people determine whether the MBA degree would be useful to them and, if so, helping them identify the schools that will best fit their needs. The program includes workshops on admissions procedures, curricula, financial aid, career planning, and job search strategies in addition to general forum sessions. Sponsored by the Graduate Management Admission Council, they are offered in various locations this fall: Boston, MA, October 5, at 57 Howard Johnson Hotel; Houston, TX, October 12, at Doubletree Hotel at Post Oak; and Washington, DC, October 25 and 26 at Capital Hilton. There is a $5 registration fee payable at the door. Call 1-800-537-7982 for more information.

Students are not allowed on fire escapes except to escape from fires. Several students have been injured as a result of using the fire escapes as a means of getting from one room to another or for sunning themselves. No one should use fire escapes except in emergencies.
Students are reminded to be especially watchful when moving items into their room. Do not leave rooms or cars unattended or unlocked when moving in. Thefts occur when items are left unattended.
Any member of the Mount Holyoke College community wishing to use college vans must take a van test first. Contact the Fleet Office at x2826 Monday through Friday, 10 am-4 pm for details.
