Counseling Service Staff Corrections

Please note that the following individuals were inadvertently omitted from the 1996-97 Counseling Service brochure: Cheryll Rothery-Johnson, Psy.D., clinical psychologist and coordinator of multicultural mental health services; and Sandy Kacenski, department assistant. Also, Nancy Lalonde is the service's administrative assistant.

Fidelity Fund Investments Enhancements

The Finance Committee of the Board of Trustees has approved the addition of several fund investment options for Fidelity Investments. Currently, employees who are enrolled in a Retirement Annuity or a Supplemental Retirement Annuity with Fidelity have a selection of twelve funds. Effective immediately, more than a hundred Fidelity funds will be available. A representative from Fidelity Investments will be on campus Thursday, September 26, and Friday, September 27 to introduce the new funds, and to answer any questions. See the calendar for details.

Satellite Copier Program

The College community is reminded that Toshiba photocopiers will be replacing all non-Toshiba brands of photocopiers currently located on campus (with the exception of the library, the Admissions Office, and the Alumnae Office) beginning September 23. An installation schedule follows. With the new program, photocopying should be much more convenient for all. Once you learn how to use one machine, you will be able to easily use all forty-two machines on the program. Each department, program, individual, grant, student organization, etc., will have the opportunity to be assigned an individual code to be used for photocopying.

Key operators have been assigned to each machine that services more than one department. Be sure to get your code requirements to the key operator in your area. In addition, if you wish to use a copier in another location, contact the key operator for the machine at that location as well.

Beat the High Cost of Books

For only $1 you can walk away from Williston Library with great reading. The library holds an ongoing sale of books it no longer needs: duplicates, worn copies, etc. Stop by the fourth floor any time and look for a small bookcase holding both "junk and treasures."

Students

Honors and Independent Students

Make an appointment at the reference desk in Williston Library and a librarian will help you identify sources specific to your research topic. When appropriate to your research, we will discuss Internet resources and sources in other library collections. To make an appointment, call x2212, Monday-Friday, 9 am-5 pm or send email to libref.

Fall Semester Counseling Service Groups

The Counseling Service offers a group therapy program that addresses a variety of needs. The following groups will be offered fall semester (all sessions are confidential and free of charge): Black Women's Psychotherapy and Support Group; Relationship Issues Group; *AIDS Support Group; *Bereavement Group; Survival for Survivors Group (*denotes groups that may be coed).

This year, for the first time, it will be possible for students from the Five Colleges to attend counseling groups offered by other schools in the consortium. Information about groups offered by Amherst, Hampshire, and Smith Colleges and the University of Massachusetts is available through the MHC Counseling Service, x2037. Note that because MHC groups are now open to the other colleges, some groups--as noted above--may be coed. Students interested in MHC groups or groups offered by the other colleges must make an appointment to meet with an MHC Counseling Service therapist prior to the first session. To learn more about the groups, or to schedule a consultation, call the MHC Counseling Service, x2037, by Friday, October 4.

Singles Lottery

Any available singles will be distributed by lottery Thursday, September 26, at 8 am in the Office of Residential Life, 1 Mary Lyon Hall. A listing of available singles will be posted on the office door on Wednesday, September 25 at 1 pm. Do not call the office to obtain the listing. Participants are encouraged to register by noon Wednesday, September 25. Only seniors, juniors, and sophomores living in completely occupied double rooms are eligible to participate in the lottery. Students will draw numbers and choose from available rooms in order of class seniority, starting with the lowest number drawn. You must be present at 8 am on September 26 to participate.

Course Drops

The last day to drop a course and not have the course, noted DR, recorded on the MHC transcript is Wednesday, September 25, by 5 pm. Beginning September 26, all dropped courses will remain on record.

Ungraded Option

All students are reminded that the ungraded option may be elected only during the first three weeks of classes (except for members of the class of 2000, who have until November 15). Once elected, the option will not be removed after the fifteenth day of classes. The ungraded option cannot be elected for courses taken to meet general degree requirements, which include distribution, language, and the multicultural perspectives requirements; or for courses in the major or minor. Any courses taken under the ungraded option will be counted only as elective credit toward the 128 credits required for the Mount Holyoke degree. The deadline for declaring or changing the ungraded option is Wednesday, September 25.

It is a three-week program over January Term where students work in an organization or industry of interest to them. Don't wait until December to plan your January Term--you must attend an information meeting to learn about the program and receive application materials. See the CDC calendar of events and the CSJ calendar for specific dates and times. All CEP participants are required to attend an information meeting.

Internships

Have you just returned from a summer internship? Don't forget to call x2080 and schedule a debriefing appointment with an internship counselor. This is required for you to receive transcript notation.

Fellowships & Scholarships

Information about applying for all awards listed here is in the CDC library in the fellowship files. Questions? For these three awards, make an appointment with the fellowship coordinator, Hilary Shaw, x2080. Students with general questions about awards should come to one of the workshops and open advising sessions on Fridays in the CDC.

St. Andrew's Fellowships for Study in Scotland

Do you have some Scottish descent and a permanent residence within 500 miles of New York City? Two $13,000 scholarships will be given by the St. Andrew's Society of the State of New York for study in Scotland in 1997-98. A Mount Holyoke graduate of the class of 1994 won a fellowship for study in Edinburgh in 1994-95. Study may be in any field; applicants must be U.S. citizens. Mount Holyoke may nominate one student to the competition. Applications are due in the Career Development Center, Monday, November 19, by 5 pm.

National Hispanic Scholarship Fund

Last year 2,593 NHSF scholars who represented all Hispanic groups in every section of the country received more than $3,000,000 in scholarships. Applications must be postmarked by Tuesday, October 1 (including in one packet the application form, an official transcript, one letter of recommendation, and a personal statement). The application forms are in the Career Development Center library's fellowship files.

Echoing Green Public Service Fellowships

The graduating class of 1997 and alumnae who graduated within ten years of the date of the next awards, 1997--the classes of 1987 through 1996--are invited to apply for the Echoing Green Public Service Fellowships. These awards provide $15,000 for founding a public service project anywhere in the world. There are no gpa, age, or citizenship requirements. Mount Holyoke alumnae and seniors may apply individually or with a partner who need not have a Mount Holyoke affiliation. Mount Holyoke is one of thirty-eight colleges and universities across the United States invited to submit nominees. Don't wait for the fall information meeting to begin thinking about your application. Pick up an information handout in the Career Development Center library's fellowship files and watch the calendar for a meeting later in October with representatives from the foundation and former fellows.
