Campus Asked to Make a Caring Investment through Annual Community Campaign

If you think twenty cents doesn't buy much these days, think again. According to the United Way, twenty cents daily for a year is enough to provide five hours of homework help to young girls at Holyoke's Girls, Inc. Donations small and large will be welcome as the College holds its Community Campaign fund drive, October 28-November 7. Students, faculty, and staff are being asked to "make a caring investment" to improve the lives of others in nearby communities. Last year's campaign raised nearly $20,000, and this year's goal is $30,000, according to chair Phil Buchanan, assistant to the president.

The Community Campaign is an umbrella organization of nonprofit organizations funded through the United Way and the Combined Health Appeal, a group of sixteen Massachusetts health agencies.

Funds may be donated directly, or through MHC payroll deduction, to a specific member organization, such as Nueva Esperanza, the National Multiple Sclerosis Association, the YMCA, or the American Lung Association. Donations may also be made to other nonprofit organizations, including those not affiliated with the United Way or Combined Health Appeal.

President Joanne Creighton encouraged everyone to consider taking part in the Community Campaign. "It is important to us as individuals and to the College as a whole to support the surrounding communities in which we live and work," she said.

Employees will receive Community Campaign materials through campus mail, and the SGA is planning ways to invite student participation.
