Campus Mail Is Not For Political Use

As a tax-exempt institution, MHC may not participate in political campaigns. This federal law also bars use of campus mail by faculty or staff to support political candidates. The staff handbook underlines this policy, stating campus mail "is for the transmission of material relating to college business and not for mailings of a personal, political, or commercial nature."

Employee Service Awards

The Employee Service Awards Committee is beginning preparations for this year's program to recognize staff for their years of service to the College. Employees with twenty, twenty-five, thirty, and forty years of service will be honored at the Winterfest celebration on Thursday, December 12, and those with five, ten, and fifteen years of service will be honored at the awards breakfast on Friday, December 13. Watch for further details in campus mail and in the College Street Journal.


Students

Registering for Geology D102

In addition to formally registering for Geology D102 (History of Life), students must apply electronically to request admission to the class. Students who don't have email must apply for an account no later than three weeks before advising. User services is unable to accommodate late requests. Each student must use her own computer account. Only requests received after 8 am (computer time) on the first day of advising will be considered.

To apply electronically:

1. Log into mhc or axis.

2. At the system prompt (mhc.mtholyoke.edu%) type geold102. Press enter.

3. Key in the requested information.

Register Now for Renaissance Symposium

Register now for Cultural Exchanges: Nations, Classes, and Genders in the Early Modern Period, a Five College Renaissance symposium that will take place at Mount Holyoke (11/15), Smith (11/16), and UMass (11/14 and 11/17). Instead of the usual academic conference format of paper presentations, this symposium offers a mix of keynote speakers and interactive workshops, led by distinguished scholars in a variety of Renaissance fields such as history, literature, religion, cartography, and others. Those wishing to participate in the symposium and register for workshops should contact Francisco J. Borge at the Massachusetts Center for Renaissance Studies at UMass, 545-5467, as soon as possible to ensure space in the workshops of their choice. There is no conference registration fee for members of the five colleges. Faculty members from Mount Holyoke participating in the symposium are: Harold

Career Development Center (CDC)

The Career Development Center is located in the Health Center building. Office hours are Monday-Friday, 8:30 am-5:00 pm. Drop-in hours are Wednesday-Friday, 2:00-4:30 pm, and Tuesday, 9:00-11:30 am. Additional library hours are Thursday, 5-8 pm, and Saturday, 1-4 pm.

Examinations

Registration for the December 14 Graduate Record Exam must be received by November 8.

Registration for the December 7 Law School Admission Test must be postmarked by November 1.

International Identification Cards

For students planning to study or travel abroad, the CDC has international student identification cards available for $19 per card. See Janice Kane.

Career Exploration Project (CEP)

Notebooks listing CDC-sponsored placements are available in the CDC library through October 28. Come see the opportunities that await you.

Thinking of designing your own CEP? Not sure where to begin? Come to one of the Developing Your Own CEP workshops offered in October. These workshops are not mandatory; they are intended to help you discover your network and create opportunities for an exciting CEP experience this January.

Reminder: Tuesday, October 22-Monday, October 28 is CEP deadline week. Applications will be accepted during this week at the CDC from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm. Remember, only final materials (application, cover letter, and resume) will be accepted during this week. Plan ahead: see a counselor regarding your ideas, and have your resume and cover letter critiqued during drop-in hours or during one of the CEP critique times offered in October. See the CDC calendar of events or the CSJ calendar for specific dates and times.

Summer Internships and Employment Opportunities

The following internships represent only a sampling of the hundreds of opportunities listed in the CDC. Further information and application materials are filed in the College Street Journal binders in the CDC library.

American Society of Magazine Editors' magazine internship program offers ten-week summer internships in the editorial offices of consumer magazines and business publications. Internships may include proofreading, copyediting, interviewing, attending editorial meetings, and researching articles. Applicants must be juniors. Deadline for application is December 16.

National Institute of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, is accepting applications from U.S. citizens for participation in its National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases summer internship program in biomedical research. Juniors, graduating seniors planning to attend graduate or professional school in the fall, and first-year graduate or medical school students may apply for the program, which runs from May 1 to August 31. A GPA of 3.0 (preferably higher in science) is required. Applications are due February 1. Minority students may wish to apply to the Introduction to Biomedical Research Program, which will be held February 9-14, and from which a significant number of summer interns are chosen. The application deadline for this week-long program is November 8.

The Putney School's teaching intern program for the 1997-98 academic year is accepting applicants. Previous intern openings have included foreign languages, English, mathematics, science, computer work, history, music, and the visual arts. Interns will operate on the same schedule as the faculty, from August to June. Other requirements include participation in evening activities, living in dormitories, and serving as assistant dormitory heads. Housing and meals are provided while school is in session. Interns also receive medical insurance and a stipend of $10,000. More information is available at http://www.putney.com on the World Wide Web. An application deadline is not listed.

Department of Consumer Affairs of New York City offers internships in communications, consumer services, adjudication, legal affairs, and enforcement. College credit is available for full- and part-time internships. Requirements for each position may include communication skills, writing and research ability, an interest in consumer affairs, or analytical ability. No deadline for application is listed.

Teach for America is recruiting interns for its 1997 admissions team in New York City. Two positions are available, a sixteen-week position beginning in January and a twenty-week one beginning in February. Undergraduates and graduates are accepted and are paid $350 weekly. Applications due December 4.

Fellowships & Scholarships

Information about applying for awards listed here is in the CDC library in the fellowship files. Interested students who have questions about these awards should make an appointment with the fellowship coordinator, Hilary Shaw, x2080. Students with general questions about awards should come to one of the workshops and open advising sessions on Fridays in the CDC.

St. Andrew's Society Fellowships for Graduate Study in Scotland Do you have some Scottish descent? Is your permanent residence within 500 miles of New York City? Are you interested in studying in Scotland the year after graduation? Two $13,000 scholarships will be given by the St. Andrew's Society of the State of New York for study in Scotland in 1997-98. A Mount Holyoke graduate of the class of 1994 won an award. Study may be in any field. Mount Holyoke may nominate one senior. Preliminary applications are due in the CDC on Monday, November 18, by 5:00 pm

American Political Science Association Graduate Fellowships for Minorities Awards of $6,000 to help minority (African American, Chicano, Latino, and Native American) students begin doctoral study of political science. The foundation must receive application materials by November 1. If you are interested in applying, call or email the fellowship coordinator as soon as possible.

SEG (Society of Exploration Geophysicists) Foundation Scholarship Program offers grants ranging from $750 to $3,000 for undergraduate or graduate students pursuing a career in geophysics. Deadline: March 1. This is one of several awards for students in geology.

Zonta International Foundation Amelia Earhart Fellowships provide $6,000 awards to women entering or continuing full-time graduate study in aerospace- related sciences and engineering.
