Faculty: What Are Your Favorite Books?

Hello, MHC faculty. We students want to read books outside of required class reading. We want to know which books you've enjoyed or have changed your life. If you could recommend ten books that you think a person should read within his or her lifetime, which would they be? Which book has influenced you most? You may want to comment on why you chose these particular books. If there is a significant response to this request, the lists will be compiled and may be included in the Mount Holyoke News. These lists will contribute to our literary awareness and enjoyment of books outside the classroom. Thank you for your input. Please respond by November 15 to Ludmila Merka '99 (lmerka).

Financial Aid for Study Abroad

Applications for financial aid for study abroad for all or part of the 1997-98 academic year are due in the International Affairs office on December 2. (This deadline does not include the British university exchanges, which have an application deadline of November 1.) Students who receive financial aid from Mount Holyoke (including international students) are eligible to apply for aid for study abroad in almost any country. Aid is limited, and will be awarded on a competitive basis with priority to eligible students who can clearly demonstrate that a period of study abroad is an essential and integral part of their academic program. All aid is for a semester or an academic year only, except as indicated. Some funds are available without restriction by country. Note these special awards:

Bonn University Scholarship, for exchange with the University of Bonn--open to U.S. citizens only;

Ruth Sedgwick Scholarship, for a semester, an academic year, or summer study or an internship in Spain, Spanish America (including Puerto Rico), or Brazil;

Mary Vance Young Scholarship, for study in France or Italy;

Frederick and Elsa Sell Scholarship, for study abroad in connection with projects furthering European-American ties;

Oxford Program Scholarship and Maurice Bender Scholarship for study in Israel.

Career Exploration Project (CEP)

For anyone who has submitted an application for a CDC-sponsored CEP or anyone considering designing her own CEP, please use the CDC calendar of events to identify an evaluation meeting that you can attend. These mandatory meetings are offered at various dates and times throughout the remainder of the semester. Don't wait too long; there will be no makeup session for those who don't attend a meeting. It's imperative to attend one of these meetings to ensure a successful CEP experience as well as to receive transcript notation and a financial stipend (if applicable).

Reminder For CDC-sponsored CEPs--refer to guidelines for applications in your application packet to ensure that you are making the necessary contacts with your sponsors and conducting any required interviews with them. If you need help, stop by the CDC during drop-in hours or call to make an appointment.

Once a sponsor offers you a CEP and you accept it, remember to send your blue postcard--CEP Acceptance Card--to the CDC by November 29.
