Upcoming CSJ Deadline
Due to Thanksgiving break, there will not be a November 29 College St. Journal. All information for the November 22 issue (with calendar listings for November 22-December 6) is due Friday, November 15.
Course Drop Deadline
Friday, November 15, is the last day for students to drop a course. Drop forms, which are available in the registrar's office, must be returned there with all appropriate signatures by the drop deadline.
Ungraded Option Deadline for the Class of 2000
Friday, November 15, is the last day for students in the class of 2000 to elect or change an ungraded option. Forms are available in the registrar's office and must be filed by the deadline.
Leave of Absence Deadline for Spring 1997
Friday, November 15, is the last day to apply for an academic leave of absence for spring 1997. For study abroad, including Canada, use the study abroad application available in the Study Abroad Library, 309A Mary Lyon Hall. For study in the United States, use the academic leave of absence application available in the registrar's office, 6 Mary Lyon Hall.
The Golden Pear
The Golden Pear Kitchen in Wilder Hall is a campus facility to be used primarily by students for special meal preparation. It includes full kitchen facilities and utensils, a dining room table that seats six to eight, and a small living room area.
Reservations can be made through Holly Dearborn, 315 Wilder Hall, x4152. Reservations must be made twenty-four hours in advance.
Students who use the kitchen must pay a $3 fee. Two dollars of that fee are used as a deposit for the key, and are refunded when the key and an inventory sheet are returned. One dollar is for use of the kitchen, and will not be refunded, but will be used to cover the expense of maintaining the kitchen, replacing worn-out items, etc.
The Golden Pear provides you with opportunities to come together for your own home-cooked meal in an intimate atmosphere with good friends. We encourage you to take advantage of this special facility.
Summer Fellowship, Institute for Urban Education, Barnard College, New York City
Summer fellowships are available for juniors and sophomores interested in a teaching career. Fellows work in New York City middle schools for four weeks during late May and early June assisting master teachers. In July, fellows study and help implement an environmental science curriculum while in residence with middle school students in a forest preserve. Fellows receive a stipend, course credit, room and board for nine weeks, and travel expenses to New York City. Applications available from Gayle Higgins, 303 Psychology and Education Building. Deadline is December 6.
Requests for Room Changes
Requests for room changes for second semester are now available from residential life. The process enables a student to request a room or hall change for second semester. Requests filed last semester are no longer valid.
Completed forms are due in the residential life office by 5 pm on Friday, December 13. Any request received after the thirteenth will not be considered.
Residential life will not know which rooms will become available until January. Written notification of granted and ungranted requests will be mailed in January. To protect each student's privacy, individual requests will not be discussed over the telephone.
Free MHC Bumper Stickers
Students: Have you heard about the new bumper sticker (it reads "Mount Holyoke College: Smart Women Know It") that was included in the latest Alumnae Quarterly? Would you like to have one for your vehicle? Come to the reception area of the Alumnae Association office, on the main level in Mary Woolley Hall, and we'll be happy to give you one.
Assistantship in a French Secondary School (1997-98)
The French government is offering one graduating Mount Holyoke student an assistantship in a French secondary school. The assistantship requires twelve hours of teaching weekly--in most cases, group conversation on American literature and civilization. The salary for 1997-98 is approximately 5.304 francs per month for eight months, plus free tuition at the nearest university. A good knowledge of French is required. Applicants should be French majors, French minors, or romance languages and literatures majors with French as the primary language. Interested students should contact Mr. Gadjigo in the French department. Deadline for return of applications to the French department is November 30.
The Career Development Center is located in the Health Center building. Office hours are Monday-Friday, 8:30 am-5:00 pm. Drop-in hours are Wednesday-Friday, 2:00-4:30 pm, and Tuesday, 9:00-11:30 am. Additional library hours are Thursday, 5-8 pm, and Saturday, 1-4 pm.
Registration for the January 18 Veterinary College Admission Test must be received by December 13.
Registration for the January 18 Graduate Management Admission Test must be received by December 20.
Registration for the February 1 National Teachers Core Battery Exam must be received by December 31.
Registration for the February 1 Optometry Admissions Test must be received by December 23.

Thinking of designing your own CEP? Not sure where to begin? Come to one of the Developing Your Own CEP workshops offered in November. These workshops are not mandatory; they are intended to help you discover your network and create opportunities for an exciting CEP experience this January.
Don't forget to check the November and December calendars to identify one CEP Evaluation Meeting that you can attend. These meetings are mandatory for any student participating in the CEP program (both CDC-sponsored CEPs and those designed by students), and are offered at various dates and times throughout the rest of the semester. Don't wait--there will be no makeup sessions for those who don't attend a meeting.
Reminder: For CDC-sponsored CEPs, use Guidelines for Applications in your application packet to ensure that you are making the necessary contacts with prospective sponsors and conducting any required interviews with them. If you need any assistance, stop in the CDC during drop-in hours or call to make an appointment.
Once a sponsor offers you a CEP and you accept it, remember to send your blue postcard--CEP acceptance card--to the CDC by November 29.

Hill and Knowlton, a leading public relations firm, offers summer internships to introduce students to the day-to-day business of a PR firm. Interns are paid. Deadline is February 28.
Washington, D.C., Public Defender Service's Criminal Law Internship Program lets students work alongside attorneys in the trial division, investigating and interviewing possible witnesses before trial. This internship was rated one of the top ten national programs by the Princeton Review's America's Top Internships. Applications are rolling; early submission of material is strongly encouraged.
The Late Show with David Letterman in New York City offers internships in research, talent, production, the executive producer's office, tickets, the mailroom, music, the graphic arts department, the online project office, or with the writers. Internships are unpaid and must be for credit. Deadline for application is March 1.
Michigan State University's Vetward Bound Enrichment Summer Programs offer minority students an intensive program designed to strengthen veterinary school applications. Program components include preparation for standardized tests, review of prerequisite basic sciences, and professional clinical experience. Application deadline is March 5.
Information about applying for awards listed here is in the CDC library in the fellowship files. Interested students with questions about these awards should make an appointment with the fellowship coordinator, Hilary Shaw, x2080. Students with general questions about awards should come to one of the workshops and open advising sessions on Fridays in the CDC.
Beinecke Memorial Scholarships Mount Holyoke may nominate one full-time junior for these $30,000 awards for graduate study. Applicants must currently receive financial grant aid and must be U.S. citizens. Scholars are selected on the basis of academic excellence. Preliminary deadline is Monday, December 2.
The Truman Scholarship is open to seniors who are residents of the following states: Alabama, Hawaii, Idaho, Maine, Montana, North Dakota, Rhode Island, Vermont, Puerto Rico, and the Islands (American Samoa, Guam, Virgin Islands, Northern Marianas). Mount Holyoke may nominate up to three seniors for these $27,000 awards for graduate study for U.S. citizens planning a career in public service or public policy. Let the fellowship coordinator know as soon as possible if you are interested in applying.
The Truman Foundation names as scholars students who are future "change agents," who aspire to leadership positions in federal, state, or local government or in the nonprofit and education sectors where they can influence public policies and change public programs.
Juniors: There is still one nomination open for the Truman Scholarship this year. If you are a U.S. citizen planning a career in public service or public policy and in the top quarter of your class (GPA equal to or greater than 3.57), and planning graduate study in public policy or in a field that will affect public policy, consider applying for these $30,000 awards.
Echoing Green Public Service Fellowships Seniors--would you like to create your own public service job after graduation? Are you committed to social change? Are you a risk-taker with the ability to get things done? Consider applying for these $15,000 fellowships. Information is on file in the CDC library. New applications have just arrived. The preliminary deadline is December 2. If you are interested, make an appointment to see the fellowship coordinator.
Hebrew University of Jerusalem offers two fellowship programs: the Raoul Wallenburg Fellowships one-year fellows program for study in Israel (February deadline), and the Anna Sobol Levy Fellowships for graduate work (March deadline). Information is on file under Hebrew University.
Grants and Awards Available to American Writers, nineteenth edition, 1996-97, is a new resource in the CDC library under fellowships.
Scripps Howard Foundation Scholarships for graduate work in journalism. Mail requests for application materials in November. Deadline to request applications is December 20.
The Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University offers minorities a graduate fellowship program that includes an internship and apprenticeship. According to New York State guidelines, African American, Asian, Hispanic, Latino, or Native American U.S. citizens have minority status. Deadline is February 15. Applicants must have taken the GRE.
