Rules for Holiday Celebrations Suspended for 1996

The Committee on the Multiracial Community has reviewed the College's policies on holiday celebrations, and the administration has accepted their recommendation to suspend the current guidelines for this year while discussions continue. "Over the last few years we've done a series of training sessions, led by the Kaleel Jamison Consulting Group, to make the community more sensitive to the needs of different religious, racial, and cultural points of view, and it's time we trust the effectiveness of this process to determine where the community is on matters of celebration," says committee chair John Grayson.

In light of this decision to suspend the guidelines, we trust all members of the community will be sensitive to the spirit of inclusiveness during this time when several religious communities celebrate important holidays, Grayson added.

In an effort to hear the diverse voices of the community, open roundtable discussion groups have been planned. Already two have taken place, and another will be scheduled and announced at the beginning of spring semester. Then an all-campus forum will be held in February to gain community input. After these events, the committee will review the information received and recommend a holiday policy for the future.
