Women in Transition Workshops

Personal Performance Consulting, Inc., is offering a limited number of free places at its "Women in Transition" workshops for Mount Holyoke students who can't afford the $90 fee. Instructors Mia Whritenour and Sandy Maynard will help you "learn how to access resources from within to create your own compelling future."

Workshops are planned in the Northampton/Amherst area January 27; February 3, 10, 17, and 24; and March 3. For more information and additional session dates, call 586-1672 or 253-0481.

Free Diagnostic MCAT Test

Plan ahead for second semester--a free Diagnostic MCAT Test will be given at the College Saturday, February 1, from 9 am to noon in the Reese Building (room to be announced). Test results will be reviewed Monday, February 3, from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm.


Career Development Center (CDC)

The Career Development Center is located in the Health Center building. Office hours are Monday-Friday, 8:30 am-5:00 pm. There will be no drop-in hours and no evening or weekend hours until February 3.

Come to the CDC library to check the 1997 spring resume referral "batch" notebook for more detailed information on companies that cannot come to our campus but have asked the CDC to collect resumes from interested students. The deadline for submitting cover letters, resumes, and other requested materials to the following companies is January 13.

Off-Campus Events

Career Expo '97, Hynes Convention Center, Boston, MA, Tuesday, February 25, 9:00 am-4:30 pm. This conference is organized annually for junior and senior undergraduate students of color. It provides a forum where students meet with recruiters from various companies to discuss professional employment opportunities. Summer Internships and Employment Opportunities

The following internships represent only a sampling of the hundreds of opportunities listed in the CDC. Further information and application materials are filed in the College Street Journal binders in the CDC library.

The Wilson Quarterly, a national journal of ideas and public affairs published by the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars at the Smithsonian in Washington, DC, pays interns a $400/month stipend. Interns are assigned to an editor to help research and fact-check articles. Deadline for application is March 15.

Sonoma State University lists a large number of physics and astronomy internships. Deadlines for application vary from January 12 to March 15 in such organizations as the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, the University of Chicago, Cornell University, and the National Center for Atmospheric Research, among others.

Inhalation Toxicology Research Institute in Albuquerque, New Mexico, is seeking biology, chemistry, math, physics, or engineering majors with a minimum GPA of 3.0 to assist in research on the nature of airborne materials. MBNA New England's summer associate program is for students graduating in May 1998. Ten students are selected for customer contact positions in Camden or Belfast, Maine. Application forms are due March 18.

Employment Opportunities

Employment opportunities in a variety of fields are listed in a series of job books filed in the CDC library. Students are encouraged to stop by the library and research their areas of interest.

Seniors seeking employment The Liberal Arts Career Network, "Barterbase," is now accessible to Mount Holyoke students via http://www.mtholyoke.edu/offices/careers/main/homepage.htm. Barterbase, the result of a collaboration of twenty-five top liberal arts colleges, offers students career opportunities in twenty-five different fields of interest and lists more than 2,000 job possibilities. The CDC library also maintains several Barterbase binders for browsing.

Comrise Technology offers employment throughout the United States in a number of fields, including software, statistics, and public relations. More information is available online at www.comrise.com. J/12, J/13.

J. Crew in New York City seeks employees to monitor consumer behaviors, analyze response data, and develop seasonal circulation plans. J/8.

ACG Real Estate Consulting in Atlanta lists January and June openings for real estate analysts. Strong computer and analytical skills are essential. J/8.

Pharm-Eco Laboratories, Inc., in Lexington, MA, is accepting resumes for three positions: organic synthetic chemist, quality control/analytical chemist, and technical administrative assistant. J/14.

Fellowships & Scholarships

Information about applying for awards listed here is in the CDC library in the fellowship files. Interested students with questions about these awards should make an appointment with the fellowship coordinator, Hilary Shaw, x2080. Students with general questions about awards should come to one of the workshops and open advising sessions on Fridays in the CDC.

Search for Scholarships and Fellowships on the World Wide Web Instructions for accessing two free search services on the Web--fastWEB and SRN Express--are in the CDC Library. FastWEB creates a mailbox for nightly updates. Also check out the Financial Aid Page, the best source for up-to-date information on every aspect of funding for undergraduate and graduate studies. You can use these Web resources together with the fellowship directories to locate sources of funding.

Athens College Fellowship One-year postgraduate teaching fellowship for graduating seniors at Athens College, a private, coeducational elementary and secondary school in Athens, Greece. The college is a top-ranked private school providing an American-style education for Greek children. Application deadline: February 3. Applicants should have an interest in Greek culture and language and in teaching a variety of age levels; teaching experience and knowledge of Greek are not required. Applicants should be outgoing and self-sufficient. Mount Holyoke graduates have been fellows in recent years.

Park Leadership Fellows Program Merit-based two-year full-tuition and stipend fellowships for the MBA through this program at Cornell's Johnson School. Thirty awards will be given. Applicants must be U.S. citizens. Those taking January GMAT exams will be considered if their application is complete except for the official GMAT report. Consortium for Graduate Study in Management A fellowship for study toward the MBA at eleven member schools to encourage and enable talented minorities to pursue successful business careers. MCAT Review Course Again this year, the Kaplan Educational Center is offering a full-tuition scholarship for the MCAT Review Course held at Mount Holyoke during the spring semester, February 3-April 5. Applications are available in the CDC lobby. Applicants must be U.S. citizens. Deadline: January 15. Mount Holyoke students are also eligible for financial aid for the review course in roughly the same ratio as their Mount Holyoke grant aid to the total cost of tuition and all required fees.

Scholarships for Aviation education or training for an aviation-related career--The Eastern New England Chapter of the 99s (an international organization of more than 7,000 female pilots, founded in 1929, whose first president was Amelia Earhart) awards two $1,000 awards to applicants who reside or study in ME, MA, NH, VT, CT, or RI. McNair Scholars Program for juniors--summer 1997. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents who are first-generation college students from low-income backgrounds or who belong to groups underrepresented in doctoral studies, including women, African Americans, Native Americans, Alaska Natives, Latino Americans, and Puerto Ricans. Eligible juniors planning graduate work toward the PhD in all disciplines are encouraged to apply for this prestigious, competitive preparatory program. The program includes a $2,200 stipend and paid expenses at the Claremont Graduate School in California. Information is on file under McNair. Deadline: January 15.

The Undergraduate Scholarship Program for Individuals from Disadvantaged Backgrounds--Financial Hardship (UGSP)--$20,000 undergraduate scholarships for students interested in biomedical research. To receive this award, a student must agree to work a paid ten-week internship at National Institutes of Health (NIH) and work a year after graduation at NIH for each year she receives the award. Applicants may be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Fifteen awards will be given for 1997-98 to those who show the greatest promise for a career in biomedical research.
