Convocation to Honor Students; Mark Mary Lyon's 200th Birthday

Second-semester convocation, traditionally a time for ushering in the semester to come, will also involve a look backward this year to the College's past. The January 29 event comes only a month before Mary Lyon's 200th birthday, and President Joanne Creighton said it was a fitting time for the College to formally recognize our founder's birth. To mark the occasion, history professor Joseph Ellis will speak about Mary Lyon's radical vision and enduring legacy in a talk titled "The Founder and the Mountain."

The event begins at 8 pm in Abbey Chapel with a welcome from Karen Kortegast, president of the junior class. President Creighton will speak about the progress of the College's planning process, share important recent developments, and announce a major lecture series to begin this semester (you'll have to attend convocation to find out who the first speakers will be for the new Mary Lyon Lecture Series).

In addition, student leaders and achievers will be acknowledged with a variety of awards. Following the ceremony, there will be a reception for the entire MHC community in Mary Woolley Hall's Chapin Auditorium.
