Community Luncheon Sign-Up

The Staff Council invites all staff and faculty to the next community luncheon, to be held in the Willits-Hallowell Center on Monday, February 17 from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm. Come socialize with your coworkers and greet folks you haven't seen in a long time. The Willits-Hallowell staff asks that you make reservations (by calling x2217) by February 11.

Getting Your CSJ Calendar Listing Right

When you complete a room reservation/ calendar form at the student activities office, be sure to include a complete description of your event. Whatever you write in the "comments" or "remarks" section of the form is the way the information will appear in the CSJ calendar (and, if you choose, the Five College calendar).

Even if you have a world-famous speaker, be sure to describe who the person is so we can write about him or her accurately in the calendar. For example, instead of writing "Wole Soyinka to lecture", be more specific--you might write "Nobel Prize-winning Nigerian author and political activist Wole Soyinka will lecture on African languages and literatures..."

Notice of Transcript Fee

The Office of the Registrar will need to charge for transcripts made there effective for all orders filled on or after May 15, 1997. The charge will be $2 per official transcript, and $1 for an unofficial transcript (limited to one copy). We regret the necessity of this action, but unfortunately the service costs more in staff time, postage, and other expenses than we can cover within our budget.

No transcripts will be furnished on credit; they will be mailed out only after payment is received in our office. We do not have time to send reminders to those who do not enclose payment with transcript orders, and we do not like to accept payment from those who enclose it while those who fail to do so receive the same service without paying for it. Be sure you enclose payment in full with each order (checks may be made out to Mount Holyoke College; you may pay in cash if the amount is small). Orders for transcripts not accompanied by payments will be returned to the sender.

Additional information on ordering transcripts is available on the World Wide Web at http://www.mtholyoke.edu/offices/reg/transc.htm.

Place transcript orders well in advance of the date when they are needed. Be sure to give us at least three to five working days to fill your order, and longer if possible.

Family Weekend 1997

Any student who would like to have her family stay at the center may fill out a lottery form at the Willits-Hallowell front desk now through February 16. Parents and students will be notified of the lottery outcome.

The Golden Pear

The Golden Pear kitchen in Wilder Hall is a campus facility to be used primarily by students for special meal preparation. It provides opportunities to come together for a "home-cooked meal" in an intimate atmosphere with good friends. The Golden Pear includes full kitchen facilities and utensils, a dining room table that seats six to eight, and a small living room area. Reservations can be made through Peppe Khuhavuori, 224 Wilder Hall, x4121. Reservations must be made twenty-four hours in advance. Students who use the kitchen must pay a $3 fee; $2 of the fee will be used as a deposit for the key, which will be refunded when the key and inventory sheet are returned. One dollar of the fee is for the use of the kitchen. This will not be refunded, but will be used for such kitchen maintenance expenses as replacing worn-out items.

Singles Lottery

Any available singles will be distributed by lottery on Thursday, February 13 at 8 am in the Office of Residential Life. A listing of available singles will be posted on the office door on Wednesday, February 12 at 1 pm--do not call the office to obtain the listing. Participants are encouraged to register by 3 pm on Wednesday, February 12. Only seniors, juniors, and sophomores living in completely occupied double rooms are eligible to participate in the lottery. Each student will draw a number, and then rooms will be chosen by class seniority. Seniors will have first priority, then juniors, then sophomores. Students will choose from available rooms based on the lowest number drawn. You must be present at 8 am on February 13 to participate.

Curriculum Changes in Education

There have been some revisions in the early childhood and elementary education programs. Beginning in September 1997, students in these programs will be required to take Education 300 in the fall of their senior year. The four-credit course Developing Literacy in the Elementary School will supplant four of the credits currently taken during the spring semester. This means that the spring semester will only contain twelve credits. Students need to be aware that they will need an extra two credits as well as the required January term to make up the 128 credits needed for graduation. The education division urges students to take advantage of independent education projects such as working with the art museum education program or the Hitchcock Center for the Environment, or working with an area music teacher, as a way to fulfill those credits.

The practicum at all levels is now done only during the senior year. Therefore, students who want to do an honors thesis as well as the practicum semester need to prepare for that project early in the junior year. The practicum is approximately eleven weeks long, requiring students to stay on campus during spring break to continue daily work in schools. But April vacation is not far behind.

Students are urged to meet with program directors Sandra Lawrence (middle and secondary) and Anita Page (early childhood and elementary) as early as the sophomore year--as soon as they begin to consider taking teacher preparation courses. In this way, required courses, four of which require prepracticum fieldwork, can be taken gradually without the scheduling difficulties that happen when a student selects two courses requiring fieldwork in one semester.

Change of Course Deadlines

Last day to register for spring classes Tuesday, February 11 Last day to add a course or change sections Tuesday, February 11 Last day to enroll in a Five College course Tuesday, February 11 Last day to elect the ungraded option (or remove it) Tuesday, February 18

There are no extensions to the dates listed above. The academic deans may approve late adds for extenuating circumstances to Mount Holyoke courses only (failure to obtain an adviser's signature on time is not an extenuating circumstance). No late approvals can be granted for entering Five College courses. Students who do not register by February 11 are ineligible to remain on campus.

Five College Course Enrollments

Five College courses may be added only by filling out a Five College registration form, available at the registrar's office. Students registering for courses at UMass should take the completed Five College form, signed by their adviser(s), to the university registrar's office (the instructor's signature is also advisable); then return the form to the MHC registrar's office. Do this at once; if you do not enroll early, you may be closed out of the course. No exceptions can be made to the Tuesday, February 11, deadline for submitting forms. Deans will not approve late Five College registrations for any reason. It is the responsibility of each student who intends to take a course at one of the other campuses to be sure that her forms have been properly filed.

Physical Education Requirement

Faculty legislation stipulates that the College's physical education requirement should be completed by the end of junior year. Six units are required of all students who enter as first-year students; those who enter with full sophomore standing must complete four units, and those who enter with full junior standing must complete two units. Students planning to spend junior year off campus should complete their physical education requirements by the end of sophomore year. Spaces in physical education courses cannot be guaranteed to students who do not preregister, nor can enrollment priority be given to seniors who failed to complete the requirement earlier.

Course-Drop Deadlines

Course drops must be filed by Friday, February 18, to drop a course completely (so that it will not appear on your record at all). Courses may be dropped until Friday, April 15, but those dropped after February 18 will appear on transcripts with the notation "DR." They will not affect grade point averages, however.

Reminder on Election of the Ungraded Option

The ungraded option cannot be elected for courses used to meet specific degree requirements, including the language requirement, all distribution requirements, the multicultural perspectives requirement, courses in the major field of study, and courses in the minor. Any courses taken ungraded will count solely as elective credit toward the total of 128 credits needed to graduate. The decision to use the ungraded option for a course may be made only during the first fifteen days of classes--by February 18 (except for the class of 2000). Students should discuss the selection of this option carefully with their adviser(s) during the first two or three weeks of the semester. Students in the class of 2000 have until April 15 to choose or change the ungraded option.

What Happened to the Career Development Center Information?

The career development information previously found in this section of the College Street Journal now has another home: the World Wide Web. Check out the Career Development Center (CDC) Web site. It can be found through the College home page or at this URL: http://www.mtholyoke.edu/offices/careers/main/homepage.htm. Career information can also be found on the mhc.careers email news group.

This change was made for several reasons. The Web gives students access to constantly updated information about the vast range of CDC resources. And--unlike printed publications--the Web has no space restrictions, so all information is available to readers all the time.

The move also allows the CSJ to expand its news coverage, something that readers overwhelmingly requested in a 1996 reader survey. The space formerly devoted to CDC information can now be filled with a broader range of news items.

This shift of CDC information from the CSJ to the Web should provide students with more complete and current information for their career development needs, while also giving all CSJ readers a better sense of what is happening in our community.

Mary Lyon in the New York Times

To celebrate the 200th anniversary of Mary Lyon's birth, the College ran a full-page advertisement in the February 5 New York Times. The ad, which is headlined "She used her wits so generations of women could use their minds," appeared on the back of the business section (page D-24). A copy of the ad is on display in Blanchard Campus Center for those who didn't see the ad in the Times.
