"Survival Night" Helps Seniors Prepare for Life after MHC

The class of 1997 has already started its countdown to commencement day. On February 17, it will be ninety-seven days until they graduate, and the butterflies may already be stirring in students' stomachs. What's it like "out there"? That's the kind of question that senior survival night is designed to answer.

According to Beverly Clark, who coordinates the event for the Alumnae Association, senior survival night "emphasizes practical advice about real life outside Mount Holyoke" and gives students a chance to ask questions of young alumnae. Each year a panel of recent graduates discusses their own post-MHC experiences and proffers advice to seniors. This year's event will be held February 17 from 7 to 9 pm in Gamble Auditorium.

The panelists will be Blair McElroy '95, a politics minor now working in Washington, D.C., as office manager to Congresswoman Anna Eshoo; Aimee Lamarine '96, an admission counselor, public relations coordinator, and coach for Vermont Academy; Lesley Tanai Sanders '96, a complex organizations minor now a research assistant at the Enterprise Foundation in Maryland; and Michelle Yun '96, a photographer with New York City's Alexander Gallery. Moderating the event will be Alythea McKinney '90, who recently received her master of arts in Appalachian studies and now develops and teaches university-level courses and summer experiences for young gifted and talented students.

Seniors will also receive packets of information about practical matters including personal and business networking, job-hunting, finding and moving into an apartment, personal safety, handling personal finances, and the services of the Alumnae Association.
